i7 8700 and 3070 bottleneck?

Hey, I'm currently running an i7 8700(non k), all other specs will be sufficient, I am considering a 3070 from a 2060, I am looking for an answer, not suggestions for lower gpus, will the 3070 bottleneck the 8700?

Well, one can infer from the fact that Nvidia expects it to equal the 2080Ti in performance that it'll probably result in a similar bottleneck to the 2080Ti.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

You'll still see performances gains going from a RTX 2060 to a RTX 3070 for sure.

The clock frequency of the CPU might limit your performance a little bit though.

Base Clock of 3.2GHz, and a maximum single core boost of up to 4.6 GHz, with "up to" boost profiles of:

  • 1 core active: 4.6GHz
  • 2 cores active: 4.5 GHz
  • 3 cores active: 4.4 GHz
  • 4 ~ 6 cores active: 4.3 GHz

Compared to, for an example, i7-8700K manually overclocked to 5.0GHz+ on ALL 6 cores.

You won't get the FPS numbers compared a 5GHz+ i7-10700K, but you'd still be in the top end of the list nonetheless.

Using the i5-8600K and i7-8700K / i7-8086K stock frequency numbers...just to see where the CPU sits.

(Just pulling some graphs)

If the 3070 is enough to rival a 2080Ti? I agree with the above post, you should be fine. My original PC, had a similar configuration before I built my newest PC with a 3900X, and to tell you the truth? The performance difference wasn't as significant as I thought it'd be. In fact, I'm planning on putting my 2080Ti back into the old one to use as a VR-friendly living room PC, once the new cards come out I'll be putting one of those into my recent build.
