Pakistan has announced it is banning Tinder, Grinder and several other dating apps

Sandro Linux

Summary

Pakistan has announced it is banning 5 dating apps which are Tinder, Grinder, Tagged, Skout, and SayHi for ‘Immoral content’

Quotes

Quote

Tinder has been downloaded over 440,000 times within the past 12 months alone. Grindr, Tagged, and SayHi have attracted 300,000 downloads each during the same timeframe, followed by Skout with 100,000 downloads.

My thoughts

I think this is bad because it will make it harder for people to meet people on the internet

it's way more than meeting, most of them make illicit intimate contact and just want some cheap fling

and that is a problem because...? if the people involved are consenting adults then there is nothing wrong with it. we aren't living in the middle ages anymore, people have relationships and intimacy before marriage.

in fact, i don't even plan to get married. why should i lol.

Not surprised. It's funny how Apple claims to be the moral bastion of the world in terms of app stores but doesn't do anything against those apps.

those apps aren't doing anything illegal lol

At least anything we'd think of as illegal here.....
Or setting up people with goats that want to meet people.

Nope - None of that.

Thank god you dont need Grinder to know where your cousins live. But jokes aside this is what you get with fundamentalist religion, please dont take your nice lives for granted as one crazy person can bring you back to 1940:s in a couple of years.

I’m not sure it will do that.  I don’t know how their system is set up.  It may be very very different.  For one, I understand there is the concept of a love match marriage and an arranged marriage there, which is different from many other societies which are all love match all the time.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

yea, I won't give any of my opinions on the issue, i'll quote some lines from pakistan's wikipedia article that relate to the reasoning why these apps were banned.

"Pakistan is the only country to have been created in the name of Islam.[17][18] The idea of Pakistan, which had received overwhelming popular support among Indian Muslims, especially those in the provinces of British India where Muslims were in a minority such as the United Provinces,[162] was articulated in terms of an Islamic state by the Muslim League leadership, the ulama (Islamic clergy) and Jinnah."

"According to a Pew Research Center (PEW) opinion poll, a majority of Pakistanis support making Sharia the official law of the land."

"Civil society in Pakistan is largely hierarchical, emphasising local cultural etiquette and traditional Islamic values that govern personal and political life."

"Male homosexuality is illegal in Pakistan and punishable with up to life in prison.[299][300] In its 2018 Press Freedom Index, Reporters without borders ranked Pakistan number 139 out of 180 countries based on freedom of the press.[301] TV stations and news papers are routinely shut down for publishing any reports critical of the government or the military."

Yo. I'm from Pakistan. Yeah not many people used tinder here anyway and most of the tinder stuff was filled with cat-fishes but like was used quite a bit amongst the university/college /middleclass crowd. Wasn't that bad honestly. Think the country just is taking pointers from china and they intend on passing a bill that basically allows them to check user social media as well :/ pakistani internet is going fairly downhill in terms of censorship atm. Interesting to find a thread about Pakistan in the linus tech tips forums . Hella cool. I imagine sites like facebook will b like no we no give u access. and pakistan will b like 😧 we ban.  A lot of people aren't really that backwards and there's a fairly large section of society that lives life ... pretty normally as if they're part of the 21st century, incredibly open minded. ... However our law and majority seems to remain fairly draconian in nature TT

Yeah majority of smartphones are androids. I think they directly ban the servers or something. I remember that was the case with PUBG. It actually slows down our internet infrastructure quite a bit but apparently slowing down the entirety of the internet infrastructure is not as important as banning websites and being ranked highly on porn-usage per country statistics :')

Wonder if it would be feasible to build an entirely P2P, encrypted social media platform, with bits and pieces of the platform stored encrypted on all devices used. If such an idea can work, it would pretty much kill any government’s attempts at censorship short of just banning open computing platforms altogether.

open source social networks like Minds already exist, so i imagine this isn't far behind what you are suggesting.

I'm surprised it wasn't already banned. Can't imagine "those" countries would take kindly to Tinder and the like.

Kind of what I had in mind actually. A fully decentralized platform would effectively be impossible to censor, for better or worse. Trying to subpoena an identity would be futile as no single party controls the platform to handle said demand. It would be intriguing to see how world governments would attempt to respond to the rise of such a platform.

With apps like Tinder how useful it is all comes down to how many singles are in your area using it. If they ban the app from the app store then sure, maybe 10% install from apk, but what would be the point of using it if it lost 90% of its user base overnight? Plus it could be banned on Tinder side, as the app relies on tracking use location for finding nearby matches. Or just ISP filtered requiring use of a VPN to access it which will have the same problem where some people might use a VPN to access it but most won't bother.

well, look at Minds, Bitchute and Gab for examples. venture there at your own risk though, such platforms attract actual neo nazi people etc because they don't get banned there. not that that is the only content you'll find, but there is quite a bit of that over there. so, if you are sensitive to that kind of thing go there at your own risk.
