RTX 20** is now impossible to sell for a good price?

H6NS

Hello,

so NVIDIA revealed their new GPUs and my only concern is this: Every 2 or so years I sell my old hardware for a good price and buy a new one. In 2018 I bought the RTX 2080 non Ti for about 800 USD and since the new RTX 3070 which costs 499 USD and is more powerful than the 2080 Ti, does this mean that 2080 Tis should be seen on the used parts market for less than 499 USD?! That is a big oof for the owners.

It kind of is. I would expect them to go for around $500 at first since they still have more VRAM. Over time they will probably go down to around $400 like the 1080tis. I always sell when about a week or two before the announcement if I need to upgrade and live without a DGPU for a bit. I'm glad I did. I sold my 2070  super for $400 two weeks ago and now they are going for $300-350 on ebay.

In my opinion I think pricing will stay the same (for now) the new GPUs haven't hit the market yet so you have some time. Also since they have been discontinued they could be seen as "rare". That's my opinion at least...

EDIT: sell yours now to get a good price and live without a GPU for a while, if you can sell it now for 500 dollars you are 200 dollar s away from a 3080

If Nvidia's metrics are accurate there (I expect that they're slightly embellishing the truth), then yes, that's a pretty big oof for 2080Ti owners. However, demand for GPUs typically skyrockets after a new launch, in both the new and used markets. It's not going to get to Crypto-Craze levels again, but demand is going to be quite a bit higher than normal, as everybody builds or upgrades new systems around the new cards.

In any case, your 2080 is going to be far from worthless. I'd expect that you'll be able to get at least 500USD for it. For every person buying one of the brand new cards, there's another person sifting through the used market for (what they perceive to be) a good deal.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

that's a bad deal imo, 3080 costs 700$ so why would I buy a used, discontinued card when I can buy a newer, better one for the same price

i wouldn't understimate people's impatience to wait 2 weeks, chances are 600 will instasell.

Perosnally i wouldnt touch turing right now with a 10 foot pole, iirc i was shopping for 1080 ti when turing was announced, what a difference lol.

Yep, I saw a nice reference one for 800 USD. A week ago it was listed for 1000. And it doesn't end there imo.

If people need some specific model to run NVLink, they'll pay the premium. If all they want is a single card, then you have to compete with the new RTX 30 series prices. Since the 3070 costs 499 I wouldn't pay more than 400 for a used 2080Ti. Sell NOW or take the hit.

Can't say you're wrong, bought a 5600XT about a month or 2 ago. But at least I live in Egypt where hardware takes ages to release even after launch and when it does, it's overpriced as hell (2080Ti costs 25k EGP which is 1500 USD, that's 300 dollars more than the 2080Ti launch price )

Keep in mind that BIN's are not gauranteed to sell at all, where as Auctions will sell even if one bid is made.

i think this will be the low til the cards come out, kneejerk reactions, but i wouldn't bank on them going up from here, all sources say it's an 80% jump in performance, no idea on non-RT performance yet though lol, i'm sure it's gonna be lower but bl3 showed a 70% jump, thats a game without RTX.

There will be listings for 600usd but i think that's going too far lol.

To be clear, I will not go crazy over this. But if the 2080 Tis will be available for let's say 400 bucks, now that would be a good deal worth thinking about. On the second hand I wouldn't sell my RTX 2080 just because it would be too bad of a deal. And the same think applies for the 2080 Ti owners. Nobody likes a bad deals and losing money. But in this case losing money is inevitable.

Nvidia did say 2x Faster on their product launch which is fine if you have a title with RTX ON and DLSS ON.

Most people will be interested in rasterization performance, and really that will show how much value the previous gen has.

Don't panic guys wait for some real world performance benchmarks from Gamers Nexus to come out.

I am expecting the 3080 to be around 25% faster at rasterization over the 2080Ti

Buying computer parts will always lose you money - it’s not like they are an investment that increases in price. Whenever the new parts out, the older ones almost always lose value. Of course the price of 20 series cards will go down, especially seeing the predicted performance increase of the 30 series.
The way I look at it is that if I buy a GPU for 500 dollars, use it for two years and then manage to get 150 on the used market, then that’s a good deal. Will I ever get my initial money back? Of course not. But I’ve had good use out of that card so that’s ok.
However I do feel for those people who bought a 2080 Ti recently though, especially if we are to believe the performance gains of the xx70 series.

Yes that's what it means but many will still try to cash on the fact that the cards have just been announced to catch someone who's not aware...but yes the rtx 2080ti right now has we speak has lost at least half of its value and probably more.

I asked for a good estimation of my ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB ROG STRIX GAMING OC in Sweden on a forum here, and was met with basically a dead stop " like 200 usd " with no elaboration.

I think the used market is still going to be good, but people are upset and seems to be " thorns out " to the fact that their 2080TI´s will drop in value now and they will not get 100% back. I know my card is 11 month´s old... it´s store price today is 670 usd, but is it just me or does it seem that people are lowballing prices when questions arise on what a good used price would be for X version of a 20 series card?

if you managed to sell used rtx2080ti for 799 or more, you are scammer

You sound basically like the people i mentioned. Why try to make people feel bad?
Not everyone are out to force people to buy their used cards for 100% of what they bought it for in the first place. You must realize there are people out there generally just trying to sell on their cards for a reasonable sum without namedropping them.

The 30 series cards will sell out in seconds and I bet it will be months before they are back in stock. The 20 series will bottom out up until all the 30 series are sold out. Then 20 series will increase in price.
