Samsung announces Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $1,999.99

Summary

Samsung just announced the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $1,999.99. And it will be available in all three of the major US carriers: Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. It will also be available unlocked at Samsung’s website.

The Fold 2 has a Snapdragon 865+, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and a 4500mAh battery. The phone supports wireless charging, it has a side-mounted fingerprint reader, it runs Android 10, and if you can get it, supports sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. There is no Exynos version internationally—all Folds in all regions will run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+.

The giant screens are the star of the show. The inside is a folding 7.6-inch, 2208×1768 OLED display, which, this year, gets a major upgrade to a 120Hz refresh rate. The outside screen is a 6.2-inch, 2260×816 OLED display, which is dramatically bigger than the 4.6-inch display on the Galaxy Fold 1. The display has way smaller bezels compared to the ridiculous front of the Fold 1, but with a 25:9 aspect ratio, it's one of the tallest, skinniest displays we've ever seen. This screen is still 60Hz , so you'll be quickly switching between a 60Hz outer display and a 120Hz inner display.

My thoughts

This fold is the one that they should have launched in the first place and it is miles better than the original one with the tiny outer display.I hope that in a few years the cost for these will come down and when that happens I would defiantly consider a folding phone.

I hate the trend of strategically selecting images to hide that the phone has a pinhole camera.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most products improve generation to generation. Saying this is what they should have came out with last year doesn't really make much sense ;)

They're supposed to be coming out with a lower priced foldable early next year.

I'm looking forward to the day they release a larger one, with an SPen and a screen that doesn't get damaged by fingernails.

Buy a PC + a laptop+ a regular phone at this point if you need things "for work" .

Details separate people.

Paying $2000 for this fragile prototype is insane. I know it's early adopter tax, but even if you're rich AF, you have to be mad to buy this. Sorry, but it's true.

neat. I don't really see a situation where I would want a phone to flip out to be slightly bigger, but its still neat.

I hate the trend of ruining a perfectly good screen by punching a hole in it.

That too, but trying to hide it irks me even more.

Which is utterly stupid considering the secondary screen could be easily used for selfies and video calls in combination with the main camera.

After taking a closer look at the pictures I have to take everything back: It's actually even worse. It is beyond stupid. Why, Samsung, why? They didn't put just one punch hole into the main screen, they actually made another punch hole into the scondary screen. In a device that doesn't need a punch hole in the first place. I don't get it.

Maybe it's so you can do interesting things by bending the other half of the phone into the frame. More likely it's because people don't want to take two seconds to close the phone when selfie inspiration strikes or whatever.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah all these new foldables will be quite expensive for some time. Even enough work to be done to improve them. The MS Surface Duo seema more interesting to me though.

The inside screen punchhole is the one i see more than the others. You can use it as a stand to video conference, pretty smart actually. It'll be better when they finally move them underscreen. I think they should have left the selfie cam of the front screen.

I wonder what the cost of parts for this thing is... I guess the main screen is unique and they can charge whatever for it.
