There's different use cases. In many compute ones, there's no need at all for any GPU to GPU connectivity so they're fine. Not an area I care at all about, but I believe some creative types can use all the VRAM they can get. The nvlink bandwidth does enable the pool of the two cards to be used separately, so you in effect do get twice the usable vram in that case. 20 generation nvlink I think was something like 50GB/s bandwidth. While still low compared to on board VRAM, it's still far more than PCIe 4.0 can dream of and comparable to fast dual channel system ram.

A couple details about the 3080, specifically the Founder's Edition:

• quieter than 2080 FE
• 12-pin power connector
• HDMI 2.1

Performance (on avg) vs the 2080, without DXR at 4K:

• Borderlands 3 - 81.6% faster
• Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 69.8% faster
• Battlefield 5 - 68% faster
• Control - 77.6% faster
• Doom Eternal - 80% faster 

Performance (on avg) vs the 2080, with DXR at 4K:

• Control - 76.3% faster
• Quake II RTX - 92.3% faster

Metro Exodus was also tested, to compare ray tracing performance with the 2080Ti: locked 60FPS with the 3080 at 4K Ultra settings and Ultra RTX, whereas the 2080Ti would drop below 60FPS at High settings (unless I misunderstood what Richard said).

 

Do note that the games tested (except for Metro Exodus if I'm not mistaken) were picked for testing by Nvidia, not by DF.

 

Also of note, this testing was done with a 10900K, so PCIe 3.0.

I don't know why people get mad when AMD cards perform exactly as they say they do. If AMD says that RDNA 2 will perform as good as, I dunno, the RTX 3070, and it performs as good as the 3070, then where's the reason to get mad?

No it's not.... Look at the specs on Nvidia's website. They scrapped the 12pin design. The 3080 and 3090 use 2x8pins and the 3070 uses a single 8pin plus an adapter.

 

Edit. The specs say the requirements for PSU however the connector on the GPU will require a 12pin connector and the cards will come with an 8pinx2 to 12pin adapter. Apologies.

they have an adapter to adapt 2x8 pin to 12 pin so maybe thats what they are referring to

Yeah maybe 4k 10bit, or the RTX IO, but Nvidia hasn't said much about RTX IO yet.

Not being mad and definitely looking to buy an AMD soon, but the fact remains that so long as AMD does not have a competitive product with the whole product stack of Nvidia, the latter will continue to overcharge massively for their premium SKUs like the 3080. Remember when we paid $500 for the 980? Then the 980 Ti for $550 with more than 50% better performance and everyone lost their mind. Now you're looking at realistically $800 for the same "tier" of GPU.

I'm not mad at AMD for releasing good GPUs that perform as expected, but I am frustrated that Nvidia gets to charge whatever they want because they have a monopoly over the highest performance of graphics chips.

The pricing structure is great! The only salty people are those trying to resell their cards. If you recently brought a card "expecting" a huge price bump that is also on you since everything was just a guess.

 

Those that brought it early had years to enjoy their cards...

 

For the consumers this is great all round. It is the fact that they actually didn't screw with consumers and only those that was trying to play games of reselling and predicting. Is what made this an amazing stream.

Doesn't matter. PCIe has pretty much never been a bottleneck unless you have been running at like x4, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The problem is that AMD didn't really match Nvidia's offerings.

The 5600 XT matched the 2060 in performance, and the 5700XT was slightly better than the 2070.

But they used more power, had worse video encoding/decoding, worse/fewer features (like DLSS and ray tracing) and had louder coolers.

Then we come to pricing... I don't know what prices were like when they launched but right now, in Sweden, the 5700XT is more expensive than the 2070, but the 5600XT is slightly cheaper than the 2060. 

 

So I mean, I don't even think you can say AMD were competitive. They were competitive against Nvidia's products in the middle of the segment (not top) but only in terms of performance. At everything else it lost like heat, power, features, etc. AMD has to do more than just match Nvidia at one thing. They have to match Nvidia at everything, plus beat them at something like price or performance.

Let's hope they will be able to do that with their next GPU launch, but right now it looks like Nvidia will kick their butts.

Random thoughts now that we had some time to digest the info...

 

Reflex - latency reduction. Doesn't matter too much for my personal gaming, but I'll take it for the price of a driver update. Unclear if this is a 30 series only feature, or if it might apply to older generations also?

 

Broadcast - the background changing and camera following isn't entirely new. At least the background stuff has been in Zoom and Teams since the beginning of the year. Camera subject tracking is in business grade video conferencing products also. But, again, if we can get this for a driver update, can't complain. Anandtech's live blog notes says it works on any RTX cards so 20 series aren't left out.

 

Omniverse Machinima - I'm sure it is interesting to a group out there but it isn't really a gamer use case. Pass.

 

DLSS 2.0 - we've already seen this claimed in past presentations. I said it then and will say it again. Game benchmarks I think will be complicated going forwards as there will be quality and performance comparisons to do. NV 4k DLSS vs NV 4k native vs AMD 4k native vs AMD 4k + whatever they might have.

 

The claimed doubling of shaders is going to take some further thought. Will this affect general GPU compute (non-tensor)? If so, this is going to be BIG. Turing already makes Pascal look bad. Ampere could be an even bigger jump than that.

 

Claimed 1.9x perf per watt is nice.

 

RTX I/O - looks like the nearest we get to something like the PS5 system. Not exactly the same thing, but removing the CPU bottleneck would be a big plus once we get support for it. Something not so great: I stocked up on SATA SSDs for game storage. Might be time to move to NVMe 4.0. For those wishing there was more VRAM on the mainstream cards, this could take some of that pressure off.

 

The reference cards are 3x DP + 1 HDMI Whoever posted that Asus had 2 HDMI means I'll probably have to aim for one of those as HDMI is so much more useful in a home environment without having to resort to horrible adapters.

 

They didn't put the 3090 performance on the charts for the 3070/3080. 

 

With the info we currently have, I think the 3080 is the bite point for me. It is a huge upgrade from my 1080Ti at a ball park price that is tolerable. The 3090 is a case of I can afford it, but I wouldn't get the value from it. If I feel like upgrading other systems the 3070 could be interesting, especially if it'll fit in a smaller ITX case. It would have to be comparable to the old blower cards in size. 

 

What about AMD? I've seen some rumours and given nvidia's aggressiveness here, they could be a lot more competitive this incoming generation. I feel that if they're generally competitive across the range, good for them, but I'd rather have nvidia than deal with AMD drivers. I can't see AMD getting far enough ahead for me to consider making the switch. It could be interesting if AMD manage to release a 3090 performance competitor, but with lower ram and much lower price.

I'm impressed. I need to see review numbers comparing them against GTX 1080Ti, but it looks I might be switching to RTX 3080. My double the performance rule still applies and it would be sweet to play Cyberpunk 2077 with full ray tracing. Sorry AMD, I hope your Big Navi will be a success, but it looks like I'm staying with NVIDIA again.

Even at 3.0 you get roughly 16GB/s. Next time you're gaming, fire up GPU-Z and look on the 2nd tab. One of them is bus interface load. Let me know if that ever gets high enough for you to think, you need more. I don't think I've seen it go high in gaming scenarios, but it can get high in some compute uses.

 

The RTX I/O feature, when it starts to get used, so you might get maximum 8GB/s streaming from SSD. That's still only half of a 3.0 slot.
