LTT Official Folding Month 2020!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Luckily when I said it was almost done, I really meant it.

For the last time in 2020, ladles and gentlespoons, here a blog post.

And with that said, it's a wrap! Thank you for everyone getting involved, if you'd like to continue talking about folding why not head over to The Folding Community Board

The list  will soon be published so everyone can check and make any correction that are needed. I'll give you a hint you are not one of around 10% of people that messed it up.😉

I guess i need a 250w PSU. Mine died for my second rig. See what a C2Q can acually do.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

You wouldn't expect a lot of output from them, but they can certainly run folding @ home and help the cause. :)

Maybe I should start folding I have another PC but will it damage anything (I'm new to this) Don't even know if I should trust the PSU

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

It won't "damage" anything, but it will of course sustain more wear than regular use

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

GPUs and CPUs are made to be used, not stored. "Sustain more wear than regular use" is like believing GPU mining will damage the GPUs which is not true. GPU mining with bad settings and high temperatures can damage the GPUs, same goes for CPUs. And same can be said for Folding. But if you keep your temps at reasonable level, you won't notice "more wear than regular use" even after those units become obsolete.

Therefore, @Kanna, just check your temps from time to time, fold away and do not worry about such stuff. If your GPU/CPU survived all the gaming and other tasks, Folding will not hurt it any more than that, unless you start pushing the limits with hard OC and overvoltage. I recommend power limiting your GPUs as they will draw much less power, produce much less heat and lose only 5-10% PPD.

~75% PL on all my cards so far has been the sweet spot. Overclocking will not bring you much PPD but it will bring more heat and power draw.

I will say I did have some concerns from just not knowing really, that mining or non-stop FAH would cause some degradation.  Fortunately lots of good advice here on the forum and discussion about it.

One of my cards has folded 24/7 since the March COVID event.  When I go to game on it, it still works like the first day I used it, same clocks, same temps, same performance.  The one on my home rig only gets pushed during folding events, and usually gets gamed on, and no difference there.

I guess I would be wary about a mining card (in terms of buying one) if I couldn't verify the person did not abuse it (high power, overclocked, fans maxed, high temps sustained).  But in my air cooled 24/7 rig, the CPU and GPU both sit in the high 60's to mid 70's, usually right around 68 - stock settings, no OC..  I would wager as long as you are keeping reasonable temps and not pushing it hard to it's limits at all times (esp in temp), it would go on working as usual the way it should (since it's designed for that).

I didn't need a reason to upgrade to a RTX3090 or two, but this will do. I wonder how many here will scoop up some cheap 2080Ti's to boost their rigs.
I hope to beat my place that I came last time, I ranked 39 but was so close to 38.

Good luck everyone.

These are the people I need to beat.

Here we go again!

I also use folding month as my annual reminder to dust the folding rig since it's out of sight running 24/7 in my basement since the first event in 2018.

What kind of PPD do I need?

My V56 currently says 220K PPD but I won't be running it 24/7 for this.

I do have to register my objections to the 1 WU per day thing cos GPU WUs are really huge. Only way I could get this besides running 24/7 is through CPU WUs which are insanely tiny by comparison.

Does feel like some of the prize requirements are a bit too high tbh and are unachieveable without either A) 24/7 folding mining on less than a Vega or B) Buying multiple high end GPUs.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.
