LTT Official Folding Month 2020!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Luckily when I said it was almost done, I really meant it.

For the last time in 2020, ladles and gentlespoons, here a blog post.

And with that said, it's a wrap! Thank you for everyone getting involved, if you'd like to continue talking about folding why not head over to The Folding Community Board

It would be cool to get a team WU counter going, to see how many the team has done over the course of the event.

Any of the event workers that isn't Spec able to make something like that show up in the spreadsheets in the future?

One could technically collect the WU count before the event and then after, won't be perfect but nothing will be.

I love these kinds of games. It is similar to C&C, Red Alert series which was one of the first games I ever bought. One day I'll get it, if it ever shows up on Humble Bundle I'll jump on it immediately, it's just imo Satisfactory is better out of the 2 for being 3D instead of overhead world.

Tho now I want to play C&C again 😂 Also reminded me to maybe update and play Naval Action as well.

Back in June they released a  remastered 4k C&C where they went and upscaled every part of the game, even the live action scenes.
I think it's like $20 for the whole game package.

DAM now to be in the top 100 you have to have 514M+ that is crazy so we have ~100 People that qualify for Platinum.  just a few weeks ago i was in the 70s or lower 80s and got platinum

for the record thus was taken oct 11

$27 in Canada, which is a good price if it wasn't still a EA game title.

If it goes on sale or lands on HB where I can donate all money to charity, I'll buy it. Till then it can sit there because why rebuy something you already have?

Despite how expensive my system costs, and with the number of GPU's I have running, this would easily add another $1K... that I don't have.

That depends how good you want it to look, but the water blocks would be the most expensive part everything else can be as janked as the system currently is :P

Also if water cooled it saves a huge amount of room and would cut down all the needless fan power draw, and wouldn't sound like you have a 747 in your home too.

Despite what tech tuber videos show us for the LOLs on the regular,  water is a terrible option for cooling 24/7 workload systems.

A folding rig never gets the recovery and normalization in the rad / loop that benchmarking or gaming only systems do.

Air cooling is far less hassle to maintain, far safer in terms of chance of hardware damage, allows for very fast hardware swaps, cheaper to implement and does not saturate if you can keep ambient temps in the room nominal when compared to water.

I can run a P600s with 4-6 cards in it using risers to move / hang cards and use the space effectively, 3X 140mm fans in the front, 2X 140mm fans in the top, 1X 140mm in the back combined with 2 slot GPUs to feed them lots of air, and get the hot air out, but keep the physical space taken as small as possible.

This turns over all the air in the case multiple times a minute with pretty low noise considering what it's doing 24/7.

My AIO GPUs in the past however, start off with low temps, eventually end up with a temp/throttle due to saturation, and a rad that feels like a space heater per single card as it's seems better at dumping heat in to the room, thus heating up the ambient temps feeding the intake fans and making matters worse etc.

Take the money you would spend on blocks or AIO gpus and the rest of the water-cooling, and get another GPU or build another folding rig with ebay parts and start slowly filling the slots over time.

It would be interesting to see a watercooled system, tho. The only practical use would be to move the heat outside. By that point, it would be cheaper to buy and run an air conditioning unit.

The cost of a 3080 to watercool a system is just not practical.

3 words Rubbermaid, Old freezer 🤣

Typically you can find free freezers and Rubbermaid costs maybe $5, equally if you find a free/cheap tiny freezer just drill out 1 hole on the lid for in, the one for out is the outlet plug at the bottom, buy bags of ice (or make your own) TADA cheap cooling.

Typically tiny freezers are rated about 100Wish of power but if you've ever owned one you know they don't always consume said W 24/7. Bigger freezers full of ice = less on time, so it comes down to how much room you can afford to use for cooling. Equally if you are creative enough you could make the freezer work for you too for food :) win/win.

Tho I do agree with @LAR_Systems It isn't worth doing unless you are really bored, potentially with most/all items already. Tho soft tubing is best vs hard making swaps (if done right) fairly easy to do. I do wonder now if you could water cool a mineral oil folding rig 🤔

Sometimes I can't tell if your name is Egg-Roll or Egg-Troll but assuming even for the lols this is seriousish ;)

The concept of using non specialized (used, old, second hand) freezers, fridges etc. to add to some kind of mega cooling loop again is only for benchmarking and to say you did it once.

The compressors in these types of devices are not intended to be running constantly and will not last very long at all if constant heat is added to the system they are trying to cool.

Fridges and freezers intended are for you to open the door or the temp to rise slowly while closed and then the compressor to kick in to only burst cool the area to the right temp, then shutoff.  (While using lots of power and generating a fair amount of heat to do so)

This is why when Linus shows this stuff he is using specifically a water chiller, which is designed at least to convert warm/hot water to cold water for continuous use, and the ice tub is constantly having new ice dropped in, not a 24/7 use case.

Don't kill your home appliances trying to cool your PCs.

Oh... and mineral oil... just... no... NO NO NO... also... doubt mineral oil would cool jack these days with modern GPU/CPU thermals in a multi GPU system.
