LTT Official Folding Month 2020!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Luckily when I said it was almost done, I really meant it.

For the last time in 2020, ladles and gentlespoons, here a blog post.

And with that said, it's a wrap! Thank you for everyone getting involved, if you'd like to continue talking about folding why not head over to The Folding Community Board

You had AMD and Nvidia in the same system?

I did for a while. Worked fine until my HD7970 started having issues in last years folding event (not related to having AMD/Nvidia cards in the system, the card was just old and died, probably didn't like the heat).

Since it was an older AMD card and quite power hungry it was barely worth running. The points it earned barely made up for the extra heat that it put out that slowed down the 1080 Ti.

today disaster stroked - after I added one 980Ti in my big rig over the weekend, I went grocery shopping .. when I returned power was off - reason=> the breaker tripped in my office :( so both my 2080Ti's  + the 980Ti that I have added and also (2nd system) with RTX Titan stopped working for .. some time :( - see bellow what I have to deal with :) my UPS is in panic mode due to load :D over 1 kilo Watt consumption

You're either not telling the whole story, you overloaded your UPS's battery, or your buildings wiring sucks. I can rule out the UPS unless it is defective because only reason why it would trip is if you exceed both the buildings wiring and the abilities of the battery inside, or if you lost power that overloaded the battery. Is anything else plugged into the wall outlet as the computers, that are not connected to the UPS?

I have a 750VA UPS for a computer with stuff plugged in that can make it spike up to 1800 watts, 0 breakers tripped. However the non-computer stuff are not on the battery.

I found out from GPU-Z, that both of my 2060's use the same TU104 as my 2080s, so thought I'd try to be lucky.

So far it's stable. What's the chances that I'm pushing my luck with this single fan card?

You can have the same code name, but they are different cards. Your card shouldn't have the same number of CUDA or RTX cores as a 2080, tho it could be software locked due to any number of reasons including binning.

I made a thing.... Honestly more then anything it was an excuse for me to learn how to use python, but it seems to work half decent.

Document updates every 30 minutes with updated scores from the FAH API.

Getting the sheet to sort every time it runs is a pain in sheets, so you may have to sort B column Z to A when the document updates. (See Photo)

Learned a LOT about Python on the way though, what an awesome language! I had a more complicated version as well which showed trendlines, but it was starting to get out of hand with too many XLOOKUP()'s

Any reason for not having hyphenated users?

he may be on a shared curcuit like at my house the bedroom and office are on same curcuit.  so if i where to put all folding computers like i did in office and bedroom it will trip breaker. doesnt help that im on 15 amp for the 2 rooms due to previous owners remodel and using 14/2 15 amp wire (i replaced all outlets when i bought place and caught that...so gimped my self for safety as my compuers are after that 14/2 wire this winter i will correct as i need me 20amps lol. and its an outside wall too.

my KO with the cut down Die will easily max out after burner perf wise BUT it run hot so if i limit temps basicaly the cooling is JUST right to get an extra 100Mhz(2GHZ) out of it to keep it at no more than 70c with max fans

Maybe I also just re-read it and it sounds like they where  actually asking about heating as they stated single fan 😅

If that is the case @LazyDev As long as your case has excellent airflow the cards should be fine, if it sucks at sucking air threw well you might have issues.

True forgot about that, most of where I live is likely 20A because it was updated before we moved in, I would have to check tho. Most people even today it wouldn't make much sense to install 20A wire because most people won't ever see 2400W usage on a single breaker.

This is what it's all about, good work guys!

News Article:
https://www.networkworld.com/article/3587388/foldinghome-exascale-supercomputer-finds-potential-targets-for-covid-19-cure.html

Science Paper:

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.06.27.175430v3

TLDR:

F@H Research aids in figuring out how the Covid "spikes" work, they simulated them to lean they retract to hide from the immune system and deploy to infect cells.

"The spikes hide from the immune system by folding up on themselves to protect their receptor-binding sites, kind of like how a turtle pulls into its shell. Eventually, though, they would have to open up to find a potential host."

This finding provides a path to anti-viral development that could identify / bind to the virus in the retracted spike state so it can not deploy.

Linus gets a mention near the end for providing early day support via the 100TB work server.

My house circut suks (15A) probably because of garbage cables used during construction on one side,  on the other side not sure what UPS you have but if you overload the UPS capacity it should actually alarm (as it is transfering to bypass) and eventually shut down. *(this depends on the UPS - I am using APC 1500S) - the problem is encountered as I have multiple computers in the same room so that circuit got overloaded.

I have tried to reduce the power limit for the cards to ~ 90% that will allow them to run at the limit, but the UPS still had spikes that triggered another reset of the UPS this morning.

So the challenge now is "calculate how many graphic cards I can have per each circuit/room" :D :P ..

Mine is the APC ES750, and after looking at it the output capacity is 450W for the battery part which it never exceeds as only one computer is hooked up to it(1 monitor and any external drives I deemed necessary, like my pathetic 2TB Green, and a phone charger in case). My high power draw items are on the surge protection part, and 2-3 units are plugged into another surge bar, which has only tripped once.

For your problem, grab a bunch of lights/nightlights for every outlet and start turning on/off breakers It's the fastest/cheapest way of finding out which outlets work on what esp if the information on the panel was done half assed. If possible check the cables barfing out of the panel and see if you can read the rated amps which would then give you a decent idea of how many and where to strategically place your hardware.

My Ryzen computers Cyberpower has a 900W ability, sadly anything higher than 900W you're looking at server grade UPS's which aren't actually badly priced.

So what are y'alls thoughts on the Big Navi reveal?

Looks like the 6900XT ($999) will be competing against the RTX 3090 ($1499)

The 6800XT ($649) against the RTX 3080 ($799)

and the 6800($579) against the (I'm assuming) RTX 3070 ($499)

Can't wait until reviewers start to get these in their hands and show us how they actually perform and a direct head to head against Nvidia's 3000 series cards

Folding Stats

CPU- Ryzen 9 3900x,  GPU- NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super , Case- Corsair 680X , RAM -Corsair Vengeance RGB (x2) 16GB 3200MHz

Also... for the new cards... could AMD put out an ATI Edition card, because I'm old and would like that.

So... bring back jet blower shrouds? 🤣
