NVidia 3080 and 1080p Help

Omikse

Since I am having trouble with finding or getting help with 1440p monitor, I will ask this question. What disadvantages would a 1080p with a 180hz refresh be when using a 3080. I think enough specs have come out to give an educated guess as to how it will handle. So, any speculations?

That card is built for 1440p and 4k gaming. It would easily get over 240fps in most games maxed out at 1080p

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

In that case what would be better 1440p or 4k?

Nope. The only thing we remotely have is for the 3090, and that's just pretty pictures and some vague info about the cooler design and new 12-pin connector. Any performance info is entirely based on rumors, and again, tells nothing about the lower tier cards.

That said, a 3080 should at least be better than a 2080, so since a 2080 can pretty much get you 144fps at 1080p in a lot of games, you'd probably do even better with a 3080.

So a 1080p monitor would be ok as long as the refresh rate was 144hz or higher? Or does it have to be 1440p or higher?

I honestly have a feeling like the lower tier of the 3000 series will be around the 2080's performance. IT would only make sense to me.

You're kind of thinking in reverse. You can get a CRT monitor from the 80's (assuming you could find a compatible connector to actually hook it up to the graphics card). The thinking should be what resolution and FPS do you want to play at, and then buying a monitor and graphics card to match.

If you want 1080p at 144fps, then yeah, buy a 1080p 144hz monitor. If you want 1440p, then get a 1440p monitor. The graphics card, then, is just a function of feeding the display with the resolution and refresh rate. The higher the resolution/refresh rate, the beefier of a card you'll need, obviously. However, the games you play are an important factor as well. Some games, like AAA titles, you're just not going to be able to push at 1440p 144fps, no matter what card you have. But, something like CS:GO, you could push that high or higher even without a top of the line card.

I obviously want to play at the best resolution and FPS that I can get, which is why I am asking my question.

Which brings back to the question. I do want to get a 3080 card. I have settled for budget or use (yes I know there is nothing wrong with a budget or used card) but for once I want to be able to get a top tier brand new product. And I just want a monitor that will handle it if I do want to play those AAA game at a decent resolution and FPS. So if a 1080p monitor will not mix well with an RTX 3080 when it comes out, then I do not want to pair them together. Which will reduce my card budget fund that much more since I am dipping into it to get a monitor as well.

I do want to say thank you because you are helping me in my understanding in what monitor should go with what card or game. And that is a big help.

the only reason to get a 1080p monitor with a 3080/3090 would be the 360hz monitor that's coming out, but even at 240hz, there aren't cpus that are strong enough for 240hz/360hz on AAA games, so for those 1440p/4k 144hz is recommended, the 3090 should fall short of 4k/120fps without dlss on AAA games while the 3080 will be good enough for 1440p/144hz, with a few exceptions, ps4 ports, rdr2, hitman.

And that seems to be the answer I am looking for, whether I like it or not. So I will try to stick with a 1440p monitor when it comes to the 3080. Now if I can just find one low enough that is doesn't wipe out my Card budget fund. I am trying find a 32in curved around 300 usd

If you want a good monitor, that will be tough. You would have to go with low budget VA panel which will have ghosting problems.

For under $400 this would be your best bet, and it suffers from ghosting and lots of overshoot in many transitions and isn't curved.

This would be cheapest curved 32" monitor at $430. And it still suffers from ghosting problems.

You should read the sticky as it has lots of good information about monitors.

That was my point. There is no "mix well" calculation here. It will drive a 1080p monitor just fine. Could you maybe push higher resolution? Sure. At the FPS target you want? Maybe. Want to make sure you get the best visuals? Then go for the 1440p. You can still run at 1080p if you need/want to, but then you'll get 1440p as well. Might you need to make some sacrifice to your FPS target or visual settings to run at 1440p? Maybe. Depends on the game. A better GPU just gives you more headroom for these decisions. A lesser GPU starts to make the decisions for you.

I have read that thread and I am trying to make use of it. But the budget I have to work with means I am going to have to make sacrifices for it. Unfortunately the 2 monitors you listed are outside that budget by at least 100 dollars. This is a range that I am more hoping for but do not know if it is a goo monitor or not

MSI Optix MAG322CR

or

SAMSUNG C32JG56

I have seen many close to or around 300 usd those under are 1080p with those above being 1440p

If I were in your shoes, I would buy the GPU when it comes out and keep using the old monitor till I have saved up enough money to buy a decent one.

The card will work just fine with your old monitor. While it might not be optimal, at least you won't have any regrets about buying a bad monitor you don't want to keep.

1440p 240Hz is a good option.

1440p 144Hz if budget won’t get you that far.

1080p should only be considered again if you’re looking at 240Hz or the upcoming 360Hz.

if you want a screen for a long time,

4K 144Hz makes sense to enjoy games in SP at 60-144FPS & MP at 80-144FPS depending on settings / game.

You need to decide which way to go, then look at which monitors in that spec.
