soon: Apple bans Google from iOS because it causes confusion with their own search engine.

I do not like this.  Getting tired of companies spreading like viruses into every market they lay eyes on.  It just hastens a fall into a corporatocracy.   We should be splitting companies like Amazon and Google up.  Take AWS away from the core Amazon for example.

When my gym doesn't list as #1 on a search for "MMA Wentzville/Jiu Jitsu Wentzville/MMA Ofallon/Jiu Jitsu Ofallon etc etc etc" for all local cities I pay to get ahead of everyone else.  Its crazy lol.

iSearch ? Might try it, bu I'm sure I'm gonna commit to it. I like DuckDuckGo... Besides, I don't like to centralize things. I have an iPhone, but everything on it is non-Apple stuff actually and have no relations between each other.

Yeah it's pretty messed up. I know people where suing or sending Google reports to get competitors knocked down the list

Actually, my query was "a movie set in a post apocalyptic world where cities eat each other".

I also thought that it could be because of tracking (I saw the trailer on youtube).In the end, does it matter?They have a search engine nobody else has or will have.

There is another "special" query I've tested that no amount of tracking would help.DuckDuckGo, once again, found nothing relevant while Google did.

Yah I found it.  It was in a different place than I was originally looking.  I was trying to find it in the app, but it was in settings

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I agree that saying Apple creating a search engine would be monopolistic though. That's quite dumb since if anything, more competition in the search engine space would be good and help prevent the (Google) monopoly we have today.

That is of course, assuming Apple still allows other search engines on the platform. Otherwise it is clearly abuse of dominance in one field (smartphones) to discourage competition in another field (search engines), which is against antitrust laws.

It depends on how they do it. I edited my post to include that part but I'll write it again in this post and word it a bit differently.

 

You are not allowed, under antitrust laws, to use your dominance in one market (for example smartphone OSes) to disadvantage competitors for your own gains in another market (for example search engines).

If Apple launches their own search engine and then prevents Google from operating on iOS, they are potentially breaking antitrust laws.

 

This law might seem restrictive at first, but it's a very important law because otherwise companies would be abusing and shitting on everyone at all times. We would live in a dystopian nightmare if they were allowed to do those things.

It's not a coincident that pretty much all countries in the world have gone "okay, this type of laws are very good and we should have them".

 

 

If Apple just launch their own search engine, make it the default, but still allow Google to be an alternative on the platform then I think this could be a very good thing and help bolster competition.

 

 

Also, have you been living under a rock or something? Google are constantly being (rightfully) bombarded with antitrust cases and investigations from both the EU and the US. 

For example in 2018 Google were fined about 5 billion dollars for requiring certain apps be preloaded on Android phones. If OEMs did not comply with Google's demands to for example have Chrome preinstalled, then Google would block the play store from working.

This is illegal and therefore Google were found guilty.

The Google case was a bit more complicated than that.

Google were sued because they told OEMs that if they didn't make Google the default search engine and put it on the home screen, Google would block the play store from working on those devices. That is illegal for the same reasons Intel can't just tell HP and Dell "you are no longer allowed to sell AMD products. If you don't stop selling AMD chips then we won't supply you with our chips". It's essentially extortion.

 

 

As soon as you start actively harming competitors you are running the risk of breaking the law.

"We want to be the default but anyone is free to join the party" is fine.

"We are the default and if anyone tries to do anything else we will crush you" is not fine.

 

 

A similar thing happened to Microsoft. Microsoft in the 90's told computer manufacturers that they had to pay a Windows license fee regardless of which OS the computer used. If Dell sold 1000 computers with Windows and 500 with GNU/Linux then Microsoft demanded licensing fees for 1500 computers. If Dell said no then Microsoft would stop supplying Dell with Windows licenses.

I'm not so sure about that. Google has stopped even trying to be good a long time ago, now it's mainly an advertisement service. You want to buy something? Google it: all the results will be about what to buy and where to buy it. Want information? Sorry, information for the sake of information is not monetizable "is not the future". They went as far as removing the "ncr" functionality because they think that if it's not localized (based on IP) and in your language (sometimes also based on IP, despite how frustrating that can be to travelers) then it's unlikely your search will translate into a purchase, so who cares if it's not what you were looking for.

tested it myself. never watched or heard of that movie. 4th result on google and nowhere to be found on duckduckgo. i have the same experience with vague song lyrics. sometimes i just remember 1 line from a obscure song and bing would have no idea but google would find it

The EU has been dithering about just that for a while, amongst other things, (they're not happy with Google Play store coming by default on android devices either), but as is usually the case they're taking their time turning words into action. I know some people like their conspiracy theories but personally i suspect it's the usual government agencies issues. Underfunded, Undermanned, and Overworked thats keeping them from getting round to it.

Siri doesn’t have a rep any better than Alexa. I would call that a bad marketing choice.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
