Apple is Preparing its Own Search Engine

In the past few years, Google has been paying Apple billions of dollars just for the company to keep Google as the default search engine in every aspect of the company's products. Starting from iOS up to macOS, they included Google as the default search engine. However, the deal between two companies might be coming to an end. In July this year, a UK Competition and Markets Authority took a shot at a deal claiming that the companies imposed a barrier on any market competition in the search engine space. Constant pressure from regulators and the fact that Apple doesn't want to be reliant on any company is possibly giving Apple ideas to launch its own search engine.

Um... What? I mean, I guess i can see why they would do this but even so does this put Apple in more of a position be seen as a monopoly? It gives me some possible concerns, but if anyone can actually pull something off it would be apple.

And if you pay a small price of $5 a month you can get the new "Apple Search Premium" which gives you access to two whole pages of search results, as opposed to the 5 results you get with the free service. Or you can pay $15 a month for "Apple Search Pro" which gives you full access to every search result available, by rerouting you to the google search results page for the search term you entered. We know you'll pay, because it's got our logo on it.

Their search engine should be about searching topics and getting very thought out answers.

At this point i don't know why companies other than google bother to develop search engines. Nothing will ever be as refined as googles 3 algorithms not to mention google owns the worlds 2 largest search engines. You simply can't compete with youtube (worlds 2nd largest search engine for those who did not know.) and google.

If Apple made a search engine I would try it

My Laptop: A MacBook Air

Ehh, if anyone has a shot in hell at taking on Google, it'd be Apple. They have the cash and the resources to do so, although I guess if Apple were to develop a search engine, it would take quite a long while for them to do so.

I thought the same until I used DuckDuckGo and realized how shitty Google is now. The results on Google are all filtered, promoted, ads, and paid. You'll search for something and 4 ads are shown and the top result is paid to be there, unlike DDG where it actually gets the results from a proper index. The same goes for Google images. It's terrible now with the scaling and not allowing you to save the full res image without manually going to the website. I dropped Google 5 years ago and it is amazing how bad it is

I don't think this would be a site like google.com that anyone can do a search. It would probably be for Siri, which uses Google right now, and you would only use it with Apple products.

this is true lol. if anything all these people need to applaud this if they are against monopoly's because Apple has a HUGE chunk of marketshare, and they can actually put up a fight against google that no other company really can. Microsoft is trying and succeeding in their own way, but google is still the default. since Safari has around 15% marketshare in desktop browsing last time i checked, if Apple pushes an update that sets their engine as the default and users can't be bothered to change it back or Apple's search engine is legitimately really good, then google might finally no longer be the standard data collecting monster everyone uses.

I fail to see how selling default search engine rights to google and the possible ending of that agreement creates even a probability that Apple is making a search engine from scratch.  They are difficult to create, and there are several contenders. Does safari not have a search engine choice system?  I can’t seem to find one.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

This seems like a nothing burger. If the contract expires, Apple can prompt users to choose a search engine on first use.

 

The reason Google is the prominent search engine is that it’s affordable enough that it doesn’t make sense to launch a rival. For now at least.

Can't be a monopoly of something that you haven't released either. It would be nice to see a search engine that doesn't rely on Google's privacy harvesting. But Google's quality has been circling the toilet for the last two-three years for both general search and "news" with some websites seemingly hitting every keyword under the sun, yet not actually having those keywords in the page. Likewise for google news, where the same blog will show up for every keyword regardless of date.
