What device?  You mean the machine she is looking into and displaying the news article?

 

My guess it is a microfilm projector.  In the days before computers were cheap enough to be used everywhere, newspaper articles and other documents were transferred to a microfilm for archiving purposes.

What media does people watch movie in home before VHS tape？Do they use 35mm film projector？Thank you for your reply！

Betamax, and before that, all they had that I know of was slide projectors for displaying photos, but those were separate from the TV.  The only way you could watch a movie on the TV was to check the schedule and find it on one of the 3 available stations.
