Will a high quality PSU help me with this? 馃

I don鈥檛 know if anyone has seen the news lately but California has been hit with a heatwave and rolling black outs are occurring due to strain on the power grid.

Im wondering if my computer is on and the power is cut will having a high quality PSU help prevent any damage from occurring? I鈥檓 using a Corsair聽RM850x 80+ Gold (fully modular) PSU and was told it was a respectable high quality PSU.

Eh, best thing is to have it off when they are going to cut the power. It will probably be OK but you never know.

Main Rig:

Ryzen 2600, ASUS Corsshair Hero VII Wi-Fi, 16 GB Geil Super Luce DDR4 3000, XFX RX 580, Corsair H115i Pro AIO cooler, Soundblaster Z, ADATA SX8200 1tb, Samsung 850 EVO 500gb, Corsair CX850M PSU, Coolermaster Stryker case, ROG ARGB strips (most important thing)

HTPC:

Dell SFF Optiplex 990, i5 2400, 20gb of random DDR3, GTX 1650 LP, ADATA 240gb SSD, HP laptop Blu-ray drive, 1tb random spinny HDD (no RGB 馃槶)

Yes, a good psu will likely handle random power outs better than a horrible psu. But your psu is very high end, I doubt there will be another one that could handle it better. Maybe a surge protector would be a good addition if you dont have one. Definitely a ups if you are willing to spend that much because it will give you time to properly power down the system.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I鈥檓 wrong.

UPS is the real solution here, power blackouts can damage hardware regardless of PSU build quality. Having a high quality unit like the RMx can mitigate this of course, but there really is no advantage聽here to a higher quality PSU. Not much in terms of an upgrade from an RMx anyway. A 450W UPS would be perfectly suitable, you will have at least 5-10 min to power the system down before you run out of juice.聽

gonna shout out APC cause they make solid units that last forever. i'm still using my dad's old 450va APC from like 10 years ago;聽helps that the batteries are very simple to swap and easy to order online. i live way out in bumfuck nowhere and we have absolutely terrible infrastructure, but this little box handles over a thousand brownouts/blackouts a year without a hitch. almost the best part of my build :P

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (placeholder)

GPU: Gigabyte 980ti Xtreme (also placeholder), deshroud w/ generic 1200rpm 120mm fans x2, stock bios 130% power, no voltage offset: +70 core +400 mem聽

Memory: 2x16gb GSkill Trident Z RGB 3600C16, 14-15-30-288@1.45v

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S w/ white chromax bling
OS Drive: Samsung PM981 1tb (OEM 970 Evo)

Storage Drive: XPG SX8200 Pro 2tb

Backup Storage:聽Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB

PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 750W w/ black/white Cablemod extensions
Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

Basically a giant battery for your computer.

It allows it to keep running for like 5 mins after AC is gone so you can turn it off properly.

Uninterruptible power supply/source. If you google ups battery or ups power, the right things should come up.
