Is Chipzilla dead? Nope! Intel puts all Xe chips on their 42 TFLOP GPU.

In what feels like an exeedingly bleak year against a Ryzen-uped AMD, Intel announced today what dedicated graphics it has to offer in the coming year.

 

Turns out that the top-of-the-line supercomputer/datacenter model benchmarked 42 TERAFLOPS!

 

Guess 500 watts isn't too much to ask from a GPU after all.

On top of that, it seems that one 512EU "tile" (up to two tile's worth of EUs are rumored to be in upcoming consumer Xe-HPG cards) can transcode ten HEVC 4K video streams which means the top 4-tile SKU will likely transcode up to fourty 4K streams or ten 8K streams.

 

Hardware-based ray tracing and tensor cores is also in the works for both Xe-HP/HPG and Xe-HPC GPU lineups.

 

This is all really tantalizing, but there are a lot more performance metrics to be validated before we'll see what Intel Xe cards' can really do in everyday usage. Metrics like bfloat16 and int32 performance as well as SPEC's benchmark suite and countless other applications that researchers, professionals, and consumers use daily.

 

I really hope Intel is truly back on track to bring competition back to AMD and Nvidia in the coming year in light of all the recent internal havoc caused by incompetent leadership.

Hang on 42 FP32 TFLOPs? That's insane. That's double Nvidia's (non-tensor accelerated) FP32 performance on their latest A100. If this translates to other applications Xe could be an absolute monster of a GPU architecture.

But will it be sold and packaged in singles? I'm sure this is for data-center racking where a 20 or 30 amp circuit would be available. Racked and stacked.

Rumor has it that there will be 256, 512, and 1048EU PCIe SKUs for sale at some point. So at most half the equivalent performance (aka 21-30 teraflops).

 

Though I believe consumer cards will be clocked far above 1300Mhz ~ probably closer to 2000Mhz.

Something to keep in mind, raw TFLOPS doesn’t necessarily translate directly to FPS.

Something that's cool with this GPU, which will also be in the iGPU, is the media engine. It's a monster.

For AV1 (one of the first hardware vendors to implement hardware accelerated AV1 decoding), it can decode up to 8K resolution, 30fps at 10bit color depth. That's insane. That means it can also do 4K at 120 FPS in AV1.

For VP9 it can decode up to 8K 60FPS at 12bits of color depth.

 

No support for AV1 encoding though, but for HEVC and VP9 it can do 8K 30 FPS at 10bit color depth.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm looking forward to the video encodering and decoding of this GPU. It has the potential to accelerate video editing a lot if the media side holds up.

I don't have too high of hopes for this at the moment, but wouldn't it be awesome if Intel made socketed GPUs a reality?

no but yet again, success will depend on the driver support. A trillion terraflops are useless without good drivers . though I think Intel drivers for their integrated solutions are pretty ok so this might not be an issue?

Pretty sure the 4T version is like an 800W part that requires watercooled server chassis.  I may be getting it confused with Artic Sound though.  So much shit going on hard to remember them all.
