Is it possible to change the firmware on a android tablet?

Is it possible to change firmware on a android tablet in order to create a digital photo frame due to wanting to make an anniversary gift for grandparents. Any input/advice is appreciated, thanks guys!

If you are looking to create your own custom ROM, please seek guidance on the XDA forum. No one here is going to help you with software development.

I have used custom roms on my android phones, nearly all that I've owned, was just wondering if anyone knows of anything available for me to use unless I need to make my own in which I will attempt to make my own
