B550 and Ryzen 1st Gen

I want to transition from my 9900K rig to a Zen 3 ITX PC, can I use a Ryzen 1700 as a stop gap before I can buy a 4800X/4900X in September?

I know officially it's not supported but i've read that some people have got it working, specifically it's on an ROG Strix B550-I

best way to know for sure is to check the CPU compatibility list

if it's not on there then it's not supported and 1700 isnt on there

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

No

And why would you do this?

Just use what you got and get a new B600 or X600 when the new chips launch instead of intentionally starting off behind.

Unless you have any specific reason to get B550(PCIe Gen 4, more PCIe overall), it is better to get a B450 that guarentees Zen 3 support. Though, there is ROG Strix X570-E that support gen 1.

I want to sell my ATX water cooled system now as I don't want to transport it to University as i'm going back to study my MBA, plus i'll get more money for it now.

Fair point, I was hoping to use B550 or X570 as they support better memory tuning although it's interesting that you note the X570-E supports gen 1, i'll research that

I don't think there was anything passive about it all lol

Officially x570 and b550 don't have 1st Gen support

So why don't u just use your 9900K until zen 3 come out? Officially first gen ryzen is not supported by the B550/X570 chipset

I've recieved some DMs and spoken to some enthusiasts who've tested it and 1st gen works on their boards

Just as an FYI in my original question I stated "I know officially it's not supported" I was trying to find people who have tested it or have read articles confirming one way or the other.

probably because 9900k need more cooling than any small itx case can support.

I do also have to state, I dislike the idea of updating BIOS with a CPU that will no longer be supported I think something may go wrong! And worse yet if its a ASRock or MSI board where the 1st gens are not officially suported that leaves a even bigger list of possible disasters to happen... :<

Why? Worst case scenario is that the motherboard won't post with the 1st gen cpu

  • 5 weeks later...

Thank you for this topic. I just bought a ROG Strix B550-F board and was thinking of maybe swapping out my old B350 board with it in preparations for the next Ryzen release and was just going to continue using the old R5 1600X and maybe also the new ram at lower more compatible frequencies temporarily. This allows me to do all the stress testing needed to make sure the new parts work reliably instead of keeping all the shiny new stuff in a box until mid October.

While some ppl don't understand why we do things like this, there are always reasons for everything. Just because they don't understand them doesn't necessarily make us the dumb / weird ones.

I was asking the same question...

in the end decided to try myself and it works! (kinda)

While I'm waiting for my 5600x arrive, I decided to try if my old 1600 could boot on my Strix B550-E (0608), but, the only think that isn't working is Performance Boost. on my old x370 board, it was boosting to 3700mhz, but got stuck on 3200 on the B550 one, nothing that an OC to 3.6 didn't solved.

I have the same problem with a 2700 (non X), PBO doesnt work on the B550 so I just did an all core OC to 4.1
