if my gpu wasn't silent i would probably buy this but im a new time builder i don't trust myself opening a rtx 2060 super because i can't spend another 600 bucks

I think the heatsink collection is selected for compatibility with different GPUs, not to look decent.

It's true that this plus a reference card is more than something like a Strix, however one factor that comparison ignores is that you can reuse this (and most) aftermarket coolers. I currently have an Arctic Accelero on my reference 5700XT, I originally bought it for my GTX480, It's basically saved me £300-400 over the years from being able to buy cheaper reference cards and still get the highest levels of air cooling/silence.

If the Noctuas are plugged into the Motherboard how do you control the fan speed? Last time I checked there isn't an option to ramp fan speed with GPU temps?

Always been tempted to buy a solution like this for my ref RTX 2060 Super (Thanks Nvidia for the 41% fan speed lock) but hate the fact I can't plug the fans into the GPU fan header..

Reason why VRAM and VRM heatsinks don't stick well to chips is because they had thermal pads on them for years now and thermal pads used used start to leak oily crap over time. It's why nothing sticks to chips well, if they had thermal pads on them before.

 

I don't even think using ethyl alcohol would help, because that oily crap is just nasty. I think you'd have to use some sort of professional solvent or degreaser to get rid of that nasty oily crap thermal pads leak out with time and heat.

So @LinusTech wears the GPU Shirt in every video now. Does that mean that he either never changes his Shirt or does he just have 69 aka enough of them for every day ?

 

 

Also I'm wearing the USB C Shirt right now and it is super comfortable so I do get his point, just wanna make sure he actually lets them get washed too.

I can't speak for how Linus did it, but on my card I use a Gelid Solutions PWM 1-TO-4 SPLITTER cable plus an unbranded 4pin mobo fan header to to 4pin GPU fan header adaptor.

 

The Gelid cable is basically a molex to four fan headers splitter cable however unlike most of these type of cables it's 4pin and it has a male 4pin with PWM for connecting to a motherboard. So you can connect up to four fans, power them off molex and control them via the mobo.

 

The unbranded 4pin mobo fan header to to 4pin GPU fan header adaptor allows this to be connected to a GPU PWM header instead, so my GPU cooler fans draw power from molex but get their PWM signal from the GPU so the curve can be adjusted via Radeon settings (or Afterburner/etc).

 

Both cables cost ~£7 total.

Saw the misery with the thermal tape and remembered that I used an Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II on a stock RX 480 I got years back and not only did it have great performance as a cooler (topped out at 55C down from throttling at 90C) but it came with a thermal adhesive tube (glue?) that worked awesome. Got all the aluminium heatsinks in place with the glue (made sure the cooler would fit after it dried) and left it overnight and the heatsinks haven't moved since. Of course it's a one time job so I can't reattach the stock cooler, but I really don't think I want to. But yeah, Arctic have a much better adhesive if you're confident enough to permanently attach heatsinks to the pcb.

Only thing to note was that the cooler technically wasn't made to work with an RX 480, so the spacers that came with it didn't really space the board from the cooler, leading to a small pcb bend. Less than a millimetre (or thereabouts), but still there. Though, half the fun of ghettoing is getting stuff that shouldn't work together to work together.

I mean, I have experience with it now.. gonna be real with you, it was really bad. But if you're willing to tinker it'd be fine. Just needed a better adhesive of some kind and a bit of elbow grease. Not for everyone, but the core components function fine.

If you have a motherboard that has sensors placed in different places on it, then you can set the fans to ramp up based on the temperature of that sensor. For example I have the case fans plugged in the motherboard and in the bios I set them to ramp up based on the temperature sensor around the CPU area. The sensors that I have are around the CPU, VRM and GPU area. So you can set them to the GPU area. It's not a perfect thing, but it's something. Otherwise you have the fans running at a set speed all the time.

 

Years ago I used a Coolink cooler on a 8800GTS and I had to deal with a set speed of the fans, but the cooler itself was good enough that it didn't really matter.

Also I had the exact same problem Linus had with the memory and vrm sticky pads and what I was told by someone else, that you have to let the card heat up first and then quickly put them all. And it worked. What I did was used furmark for some minutes and quickly removed the cooler and stick those things on.

I use one with my 1080Ti. Works perfectly, and i got a lot more heatsinks with mine than LTT did. I had 9 heatsinks each exactly the size of a VRAM module, 2 heatsinks for the VRMs and a lot of spare ones that i could install where i wanted. I ended up using the included thermal pads to mount everything and after cleaning all mounting surfaces with alcohol (like the manual says!) everything ended up holding on. Now i run my 1080Ti at ~80°C with 2 NF-A12x15mm low-profile fans at max 1000RPM. My system stays silent and the temps in check. If you have space for 2 normal-profile fans like the NF-F12 and let the fans go a little louder the temps will easily outperform ANY AIB models like the MSI Gaming X Trio's or the Asus Strix models.

You can set a static fan speed or buy a adapter to use the fan header on the GPU itself. I plugged my fans into a Corsair Commander Pro which allows for fan control with GPU temp.

 

I really think the janky and incomplete mounting from linus did not do the cooler any justice...

 

 

Edit: As a side note, i found the installation really easy, when following the manual. You basically can't really break anything if you don't throw your GPU across the room in the process. And i've never done any kind of tinkering with GPUs before.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Can somebody recommend an adhesive I could buy separately and use with the heatsinks? I'm just a bit paranoid about that kinda thing failing on me.

Not everyone can budget in a custom loop ontop of a high-end computer, things like this can make a big difference for much less. Plus some people prefer one over the other 🤷‍♂️

I did that with a Arctic Accelero Xtreme III because my GTX 1070 Palit DUAL was annoyingly noisy in summer. Now it never exceeds 65°C and is inaudible even at 35°C ambient. But due to the complicated install I brought my card to a professional shop to let the cooler get installed.

 

I hope I can reuse it for an eventual RTX 3070 because once you go silent GPU you can't go back.

 

How does the noise of the Raijintek + Noctuas compare to the Strix cooler @ColinLTT ?

Problem still is, custom loops are way more expensive and more comlicated to build. With this you can even be quieter with nice fans. In most watercooled setups that are silence-oriented the pump is the loudest part.

Strix is louder because it has less heatsink, smaller fans, and worse overall fans. Also the decorative shrout will hinder airflow quite a bit. The Raijintek is better in terms of temps and noise even compared to the best cards from Asus or MSI. But you have to install nice fans of course.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

My Accelero Xtreme III was not silent at all. I had an AIO on my CPU, so it wasn't that and it was nearly as loud as the stock cooler on an MSI Evoke 5700XT. I ended up with a Kraken G12 instead and have been extremely pleased with that. Literally zero difference in idle vs full load noise, and the core never goes above 65C with a crappy 120mm EVGA AIO.

Back in the day we used Tesa double sided tape (with red protective film) for heatsinks. It didn't say it was thermally conductive, but we used it anyway and the heatsinks on top were always scorching hot so it must have been conducting heat. In fact same tape is holding chipset heatsinks on my VRM backplate on MSI X99A Gaming 7 motherboard. They get really warm... Tesa alwayws makes quality stuff.

Makes sense, I asked because come the RTX 3000 series, even if the Xtreme III fits a hypothetical RTX 3060/3070 I still have to take both my GPUs back to the shop then and end up with a GTX 1070 without any cooler unless I tell them to remount the stock cooler for me and that will likely all rack up the cost in work-time. I'm not comfortable doing GPU cooler work myself due to being movement-impaired with my hands.

Wow that's odd, did you manually manage the Xtreme III in software? I noticed that my 1070 vBIOS can't control it correctly so I manually set it in Afterburner to never exceed 50% and never had any issues whatsoever nor do I hear it, I hear basically nothing in my PC aside from my case and PSU fan(s) at night. My CPU cooler is a beQuiet! Dark Rock 3 cooling a 8600k.

If you need the form factor to fit in a case, yes. Otherwise what you have now is equally effective imo, just be sure to have a heatsink on the other components as necessary

Well, its two noctuas running. Its pretty darn quiet, but the full story lies in how effectively ALL the components are cooled, and as you saw in the video inadequate component cooling isn't a good idea - that PCB got really hot, really fast, and I wouldn't recommend running without heatsinks epoxied on the components or otherwise. The strix cooler, while louder, effectively cools everything, and that's saying something.
