Same boat here. It's always nice to have more performance but I really think that the 2070S has more than enough performance that I will need to tide me over for the next 3-4 years.

 

It's kind of a beast in its own right, and seeing 1080 Ti owners already questioning whether to move on, I think we're at a time where some of us are questioning whether we do need that shiny new GPU especially when what we've already run looks to be already very powerful.

Its really a huge step up after generations hovering around 11-12gb for me. And hopefully won't cost as much as an RTX titan or quadro. 

Personally, I think its going the cost the same as the current gen. Nvidia had strong sales regardless of the large price bump from the 1000 series. They tested the waters with the 2000 series and won big.

I'm saying $999 for the 2080ti and $1299 for AIB cards again that are all triple slot and watercooled. I'm just curious to see mining performance

Just keeping this here as a I'm waiting for Nvidia to release the 3080ti for $999, then release the 3090 a month later at $1200.

I guess the thing is many are looking for more performance and/or features than today. If you don't need that high end performance or new features, you already have an upgrade path today. If it comes down to cost, I wouldn't get your hopes up too high as it may be a case of similar price/performance for old games, but much better features/performance for newer games.

Yes it's hard to know how things will pan out - I'm starting from scratch and want my PC to last for as many years as possible so buying a 5600XT or 2060 now would just be foolish when waiting a while longer could get me improved performance and (probably) Ray Tracing from either Nvidia or AMD.

 

I'd been hoping the 3060 and/or AMD's alternative would be released before Black Friday so there'd be some deals, but realistically I doubt they'll be out before January...

i mean you can always wait and be lucky yes. or you can save a bit more and get the 3070 so it will last even longer :) but as always even if the amd card beats out the 3060 wait for reviews and wait then even a bit longer. it may be plagued again by bad drivers. you never know.

Deals for the new cards, doubt it. Deals for what will be old gen cards then, maybe. Who knows. It now seems very likely the high end nvidia will at least be out before then, but I've not heard about AMD's offerings.

Doubtful that's what it's for. It's probably for 4K+ capture, because at present, only very high end GPU's can capture and encode 4K, and if you want to do openCV stuff you need a lot of memory. Chances are however that the models with the highest memory aren't actually intended for consumer GPU's but rather Quadro's. Consider that Quadro parts usually are identical to Geforce parts other than the RAM configuration (eg the RTX 8000 has 48GB ECC GDDR6.) The current Quadro 6000 has 24GB and previous P6000 have 24GB, and the Titan RTX is basically the same part as the Quadro RTX 6000.

 

These memory configurations are basically the same as the existing Geforce/Quadro selections.

I've captured 4k60 video no sweat in the past, although I primarily work in 1440p to keep file size and post processing more sane. For my personal uses, I don't actually need more vram today, but I will never say no to more ram bandwidth, on CPU or GPU.

I had already mentioned that possibility elsewhere, although so far more often than not the 2080 Ti successor rumours are referenced with the bigger ram. We still have at least a few weeks to go before officially finding out.

I am running a 1080 and after getting a 1440p @ 144hz screen I am looking to upgrade to a 3080ti/3090, but I'm leaning on upgrade doing my who rig because my 5930k is probably going to get bottlenecked by the GPU.

I mean, that's 5930k. 6 cores, 12 threads. If it's overclocked, you should be fine. I'm on 5820k which is essentially the same thing and at 4.6GHz on all cores it's a pretty decent beast even today, some 6 years since launch... I have it paired with GTX 1080Ti...

This is interesting. If I can get a 16GB graphics card for under $750 with over 2080ti level performance, I might not get a PS5 at launch.

Everything I've seen up to now said Nvidia(and AMD to a lesser extent) was going to be stingy with the VRAM(Talking 10GB 3080 for $800 🤣). My original plan was to get a PS5 and skip Ampere/RDNA2, but if they actually give a 16GB card for a reasonable price I might be tempted.

For those of you thinking about selling your Turing cards, do it. They're going to age like Kepler crap, all the rumors point to the 3060 RayTracing better than the 2080ti for a fourth the price. It's up to you to make the decision on if you're using your card enough right now to justify not selling it to buy something new in a month or two.

We're days away from what is expected to be the official unveiling anyway, but have a last minute rumour claiming the configuration of the initial models.

 

At top we have the 3090 weighing in at a TGP of 350W and a massive 24GB of VRAM. The 3080 is more typical with 10GB although still weighing in at 320W, with a 20GB model expected later on. And last but not least there's a 3070 with 8GB and listed as 220W.

 

While we were all primed for higher TGPs from the top card, I was kinda hoping the step down card was going to be more moderate, yet it is only slightly lower in rated power.

 

Their source also claims these are 7nm products, suggestive of TSMC 7nm, whereas other rumours had pointed at Samsung 8nm. I don't know if nvidia will go into that level of detail, but it will be interesting to see.

220W for a GPU that supposedly matches the 2080TI means that the efficiency is barely better than Turing.

The 3070 using the GA104-300 with 220W TGP, kinda makes the information from Palit EEC registration that the 3060 would use the GA104 a bit more believable due to the similarities with the 700 series, where both 770 and 760 used the GK104 and were released pretty close to each other, and the GA104 can probably scale down quite a bit, but maybe they will want to save it for a 3060 Super/TI?

At this point I'm kinda expecting that the 3060(or 3060 Super/Ti) will be a GA104 8GB GPU with a ~170W TGP, considering that I haven't seen rumors pointing the existence of the 3060 refresh yet, I hope that would be the 3060, even if the I'm not a big fan of the power consumption.

 

Also good to see that it should support HDMI2.1, it was expected, but it's nice to see a "confirmation" on it.
