7200rpm vs 5400rpm

mattdmg

Hello I was going to buy a Seagate BarraCuda 8TB hard drive for my Plex server. I noticed though that any hard drive bigger than 2TB was 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm. Would this speed decrease cause any noticeable effect on streaming for a Plex server? Would it be fast enough?

It will be plenty fast for plex. A full bluray - which you can't fully rip and play with plex... need to convert it to some other container - is much lower bitrate than a 5900 RPM drive. To put it in perspective, a "converted" 4k HDR 10 Atmos movie I have is ~85 Mbps. That is ~10MBps.... a harddrive can do ~150 MBps read easily.

Think of it like this, your gigabit ethernet LAN is 125 MBps, a harddrive can just about always max that out in continuous reads. So........ don't really need to worry about the drive being the bottleneck in any of this lol. Your files are no where near large enough to cause any concern about harddrive speed :).

It's fine for Plex.  The only thing that will really slow down is booting up, but 5400RPM works fine for a Plex server.  I use one in mine.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

Fully agree with @LIGISTX here. Your use case doesn't need fast storage at all. Reading video files is a fully sequential process, which is something

mechanical drives do just fine at.

Just as a small side note: drives do exist at those capacities and higher RPM, but you're looking at enterprise drives at that point ;)
