10th gen i9, the newer the gen the better the performance

Practically, not much of a difference. 10th gen runs a little cooler and uses a bit less power, but performance is mostly going to be on par with 9th gen. Then, there's the fact that you have to get a more expensive LG1200 board.

Other than that, not much else. Still bad value. Ryzen is still better.

Yep. Even the 3900X takes the 10900K to school, and you can go up from there.

If you're comparing the same tier, yes. They usually are faster but also need more power and produce more heat.

Overall, don't buy 10tg gen or 9tg gen when Zen 3 is out in a month

Ok

You think this is joke? I'm an AMD fanboy (maybe not fanboy but very big fan of the company), also don't frick with intel, it's just wrong. OP, get a 3900XT or a 3950XT it's for your own good, think of 7Nm, think of the lower pricing, think of the performance.

That's not good advice. The XT models are a bad value.

Also, I'd suggest avoiding any form of brand loyalty. That's what leads to a ton of bad purchases here. People say "I bought this because I was told X brand was good."

What do you want to do? For your purposes, an i9 might not be a good choice.

People keep spending money on these high core count CPU's because they think more expensive means better but it's a lot more complicated than that.

Ok, I'll try to do that less I guess, I just much prefer AMD.

That's fine to have preferences, and AMD is doing quite well right now on the CPU side (after a decade of major failure), but some of their products are still bad. The XT varients exist to squeeze an extra $100 out of people who don't realize there's nothing special about the CPU. The high core count models are also bad for gaming. Six cores is only just now becoming the standard. Too many cores and you add latency as your OS tries to force even usage.

Interesting, I never knew that, thank you for informing me, i was actually kind of worried about my recent purchase of a Ruzen 5 3600, because it only had 6 cores, and I had understood that 8 was becoming the norm. Thanks.

i do wonder if the latest 3950x bins have XT tendencies, (4.5 1900 bus which would be sick on a 3950x) despite no name change, i can see users getting a 3900xt for that, or 3950x if it's a better bin, but they are indeed no longer value products.

No, there are only a few games that will properly use 8 cores, and none that need them.  Unless you're doing something like video editing that is made to scale with higher core/thread counts, that money is definitely better spent on the GPU (or just saved).

It's possible someone meant eight threads are being the norm, because that's true.  A four core, eight thread CPU (any i7 that's Kaby Lake or earlier) will do significantly better in many games compared to their i5 variants, which have Hyper-Threading disabled (so four cores, four threads).

that depends on the gpu really, right now only the 2080S and 2080ti "needs" anything above a 3600, and even that's subject to personal definitions, i know some youtuber was memeing a 3600+2080ti vs a 10700k +2080S setup and the benches were pretty much identical on an average 1% low across multiple games.

I expect that to change with ampere though, but zen 3's also coming out so let see where we land on the best budget gaming cpu, it'll still likely be a 6/12 zen 3.

Assuming you're talking about the desktop chips, the 10900K has an extra 2 cores and 4 threads (so 10C/20T, from the 9900K's 8C/16T), has a little extra cache and clocks 100MHz higher on all cores - those are the on-paper differences. The 10700K however is basically the 9900K, but while running a little cooler.

If you're talking about mobile chips, well that's a little different. Afaik 10th gen mobile i9 is only 8C/16T, but for Coffee Lake there were both 6C/12T and 8C/16T SKUs.

My problem is mainly with the lower end XT chips.

1900 FCLK if I'm not mistaken was already a lot more common with 3950Xes, but it wouldn't be a surprised if it's even better now as the process has aged.

My problem is with all the XT chips tbh - paying Ryzen 7 price for a Ryzen 5, or paying R9 price for an R7 is ridiculous for that 1 or 2 hundred extra MHz, and ~34-100MHz extra on the Infinity Fabric.
