Black Noctua NF-A12, NH-D15S & NH-U9S; New NH-D15 & Passive CPU cooler; White Fans!

For this forum post I took the German Computerbase article linked below in the sources and put my own spin on it.

It's not a 1:1 translation and instead I added a few things and left out a few things that didn't seem important.

But I put a few quotes in there, just to adhere to the rules. 😛 

 

 

 

 

Noctua, the company best known for its brown computer fans and expensive CPU coolers, released a new roadmap of products for 2020 and 2021.

Some much anticipated products have finally a release date.

This year in Q3 we will see black versions of the NH-D15S and NH-U9S. The NH-D15S is simply a NH-D15 with a single fan instead of two, so no suprises there, because the NH-D15 is already available in black.

The NH-U9S is Noctuas small-ish tower cooler, that comes with a 90mm fan.

Another much anticipated product is a black version of Noctuas best fan: The NH-A12.

According to Noctua's roadmap it should be released in Q1 of 2021. This is rather special, as Noctua have previously stated that because of the low tolerances and special material, it would be hard to create an all black NF-A12.

 

One product that Noctua has already shown off at Computex 2019 as a prototype, was a massive CPU heatsink designed to cool CPUs of up to 120w TDP passively.

With the help of some airflow provided by case fans, it could bump that up to 180w. (As seen on the picture below).

One more interesting product is an all new NH-D15 to replace the old one.

The NH-D15 is one of the most expensive, but also one of the best performing CPU air coolers on the market. It's praised for its excellent mounting system and quietness, even under heavy load.

The new version will have 7 heatpipes instead of 6 heatpipes according to ComputerBase's article.

I know I have to add my own opinion to this, but srsly, what is there left to say?
This is great. So many products that people have been waiting for and finally we got some release dates.

I just hope that they aren't overpriced. I'm very interested in the passive CPU cooler.

They announced this and most of the other stuff months ago, it just doesnt get a lot of public exposure due to it not having a concrete date (Q1 2021 is either the third or fourth "tentative date" for these fans becasue they keep pushing them out, so it's hard to "get hyped".)

Really massive passive coolers were a thing some years ago.  Iirc the problem was they were so heavy they endangered the motherboards.  This appears to be less of a concern than it used to be.  Not sure why exactly.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Heatsink fin plates on that fanless cooler are thicc. Zooming into specs it says up to 120W and with good natural convection, up to 160W I think. Could be 180W. That's actually not bad. Could this passively cool Ryzen 9 3900X with 105W TDP ? I wonder how high the thing would boost with such cooler...

Note that at stock settings, 65W TDP Zen 2 CPUs have a 88W PPT limit, and 105W TDP CPUs have a 142W PPT limit. Boost clock drops quite early with temperature, but saying that, I wonder if anyone has actually tried to map it? There will be many variables but it would still be interesting. I tend to brute force it and provide more cooling than the feeble stock coolers.

I don't really see the point in passive coolers. If you are going for silence then drop your fans down to like 500rpm and they won't be audible and will perform so much better than any passive cooler ever will

Big agree on that one. Even small forced airflow makes a "passive" cooler work so much better, unless the cooler design is strong enough that forced convection is enough to do that in itself. The problem is I think to reach that stage you need a big delta in temperatures, so while you have cooling power, you're also running hotter.

 

I do wonder about the fan controller. I really dislike mobo temperature dependant fan speed control as they're too generic and don't have enough control. I want my cooling old school. I just dial in a fan speed that is fast enough for the worst case load at max ambient temperature, and leave it. A constant noise is better than a varying one.

While I think you have a good point It’s situationally dependent.  Sometimes the difference between virtual silence and total silence matters for example (this would be scientific or pro audio crud not gaming crud)  Quiet computing isn’t nearly the thing it once was.  HHDs used to be the floor on that one.  You couldn’t reduce machine noise below that of the clicks of the hard drive, but GPUs have gotten a lot more power hungry and thus a lot louder.   The situation we have now has GPUs not uncommonly pushing 2x to 3x the amount of heat as the cpu they are attached to.  There’s no real point in a quiet cpu if the gpu is still noisy.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Not too sure about this one. I work in the thermoplastic polymer industry and it would be really easy to have black materials, just add 2-3% of carbon black to the master batch and there you go. It does not change the characteristics of the material in any meaningful way (actually increases some useful properties like UV resitance, avoids electrostaic build up, conducts heat away from hot spots, molecular reinforcement) and there are plenty of other additives which will pretty much reverse the (non-colouring) effects of carbon black if it really is that critical. Maybe they make the fans from something else than plastic but last time I checked Sterox is a liquid crystal polymer which is just a fancy and expsensive thermally stable 'plastic'.

I suspect it’s the copper and aluminum elements not the fan plastic.  I have for some time wondered why they chose taupe and brown.  Pigments are pigments.  Those aren’t the natural colors of the material.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

The metal parts are hidden for the most part. Don't think they would be referring to them but with modern 'marketing' they could be referring to anything or nothing.

I think we may be speaking of different things.  I was thinking of the fan/cooler.  You seem to be thinking of the fan.  For the fan, yes I totally agree.  Plastic coloring is odd.  For many many years “took” style hockey skates had black blade supports.  Then they went clear because they were sightly stronger, then white because the plastic type changed.  I don’t know what color they are now.  Perhaps anything.  Plastic bases are basically always clear or white though and are colored later.

That might be the case. I was just refering to what OP said as he specifically mentioned the making an all black NF-A12 would be difficult and the NF-A12 is just a fan, not a cooler. I might be interpreting his wording too literally.

It can be done with full control. I have all my system fans controller by motherboard where CPU fan is controlled by CPU temperature directly, the case fans on the other hand are controlled by SYS temp. If I had everything tied to CPU all fans would ramp up and down fast and that is just annoying. The way I have it is that CPU does ramp up a bit faster coz it heats up faster, where system (case) fans ramp up based on much lower SYS temperature and they really slowly gradually climb the RPM. And that is also affected if CPU isn't under any real stress and GPU is heating up the internals. And it tends to run higher RPM even after load is done so it cools down whole system slowly. Works really nice. Did have to use fan hub to hook enough fans on those few headers on the mobo tho.

 

I have it set so that peak fan RPM never goes past 1000 RPM and low RPM is around 600 RPM which for system that uses all BeQuiet Silent Wings 3 makes it very quiet. I even have my AiO pump set in such a way that at low loads it runs at lower RPM and under higher loads it goes full RPM. Coz it was audible when system was idle. Did took a while to configure it like this, but it can be done and it's totally worth it.

But what if you can achieve the same end result without fans? Wouldn't you want to save the money and also not deal with the additional cabling?

You most likely will spend more as the passive cooker will need to be larger requiring more materials and you now have to deal with a cooler that’s going to rip off your socket opposed to dealing with a tiny fan cable

I mean they already got some heat for the differences between their fans made in Taiwan vs China.
