I have a Ryzen 3 3200g and I just picked up a gtx 1017. When I try to play games the cpu usage goes up while the gpu usage stays low making the game unplayable. Any tips or advice?

IMHO 4c/8t or 6c/6t is the bare minimum for higher end gaming these days... How ever would help if you tell these nice people what games ya play...

if the game is unplayable and you have high cpu usage and low gpu usage you probably have a cpu bottleneck

can you tell us what games are you playing?

there are games that when played the cpu and gpu are in a very high % of usage even when theres a bottleneck, like watch dogs 2 for example and there are games that use 90%-100% of the cpu and 10%-20% of the gpu if theres a big bottleneck, like warzone

on the other hand, games like csgo and valorant are more cpu intensive so you would see a higher cpu usage even if you have a pretty balanced duo like 7700k and a 1070/1060

replace the cpu or lower the games quality

you can try to oc the cpu but it wont really help...

but knowing what games you play would help us help you

🤔 You might be better off just replacing that CPU with a Ryzen 3 3100 or the R3 3300X, if not the R5 3600. I don't think the R3 3200g is really suited for gaming. The R3 3100 is currently cheaper than the 3200G, yet it still beats the unpardonable sin out of the R3 3200G in most games according to the first video below.
