An advice for fellow PC gamers (display resolution related)

LOD_ismynightmare

You might be in a rush now spending your money to buy a 2k or 4k monitor to get bedazzled with the new monitor but you might get disappointed. let me share my experience over the past 12 years or so with 1k, 2k, 4k, and 3440x1440 (ultra wide). Some of you can buy monitors without the ability of returning them and asking for refund, so use my advice as a reference.

I gamed mostly on 1080p (1k) as it was the longest gaming period for me. It was about 8 years until games looked not fun anymore and I actually quit gaming at one point in the past. So I decided to buy a 2560x1440 (2k) monitor. When I bought it, I had no idea how gaming on 2k felt like because I never experienced it before or visited computer shops to try them, I only bought it online. I felt that gaming is surely better, but I wasn’t impressed and I felt that this upgrade is not totally worth it. The mistake I did is that I should’ve bought a 4k monitor 3840x2160. This is because there is a big difference between 1k to 4k, but you won’t be impressed that much if you keep jumping to the next resolution.

So I kept gaming on 2k for about 3 years, then this boredom of gaming hit me again, I decided to buy a different monitor this time as I demanded a different experience. It wasn’t a 4k monitor this time as I learned my lesson, it was the ultra wide monitor with 3440x1440 resolution. Now that was a whole new experience. Playing FPS games  (not competitively I don’t recommend that) is really good and playing open world games is absolutely gorgeous. I hated open world games before and now I bought all of the open world games. This resolution will make you love to play open world games. Whether you’re upgrading from 1k, 2k, or even 4k, you will enjoy gaming on 3440x1440 for sure as this resolution finds its niche in many genres: FPS, open world, mmo, mobas, rts, racing, and even action. So you can buy a monitor with this resolution even if you already have another monitor.

So am I gonna buy a 4k monitor? Surely not, not after I gamed on 2k for a while. So what am I gonna buy next then? I watched a video of a game played on 8k resolution and I was stunned! It had more details and things were shinier. My next plan is to buy an 8k monitor and I think you know why I was stunned. Rule of thumb is to go from 1k to 4k and from 2k to 8k.

I thought I’d share this and I try to help others with my experience and spending...

2k 144hz is the way to go.

4k isn't worth it and as long as you get a 25-27in 2k the upgrade to a 4k 30+ won't matter

personally think resolution can only go up so high before you're trading too much fps for visual clarity

high fps is more important than clarity imo, but only because i play fast paced games, still on 1080p240

lurker

my opinion on monitors now:

stop bumping up the refresh rate geez... not until ya'll can figure out some way to reduce the pixel response time

because the ghosting is annoying

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I have a strange feeling you (OP) incorrectly associate boredom of games with resolution.

IMO you're just tired of games at some point, then feel like you would want to get back to them and buy a better monitor hoping it will reignite that drive to gaming. It sure changes something, gives it a new feeling, because you're now in a new, fresh environment and thus you're reinforcing that belief in resolution being the factor while it's only an excuse to start over. Excuse which works but only for some time.

I believe the reason you get bored is different, you just haven't given it a proper analysis.

I only played games at 1080p for 5 years.

Only in 2010 did I start using 1080p and stopped in 2015.

I became a bit of a resolution junky after seeing a 4k demo at a Tigerdirect store. After watching a LTT video on the monitor, I bought one. At the time my most powerful GPU was a GTX 970. I usually bought cards that ender in 70 since I had a 470, 570 and 670. That changed with the 4k monitor. Since then it has usually been ones ending in 80 ti.

The only games that really benefit from 4k are my modded games since they use 4 and 8k textures and games that allow me to look further into the distance like space sims. These games are usually CPU bound close to 60fps at any resolution so the higher the better.

I am not a fan of 1440 X 144hz mainly because of the types of games I play make 144fps unreachable. My CPUs usually run out of steam at around 130fps so a 120hz monitor is ideal. Some of the old games I play like vsync so being able to reach my monitors refresh rate is important to me.

I am also not a fan of 3440 X 1440 ultrawides. It is not really the resolution but the actual height of the screen. My 34" 3440 X 1440 is only 13" and it feels like I am looking through a pillbox slit. I upgraded to a 38" 3840 X 1600 ultrawide and play TR games at 3440 X 1440 on it. At 14 3/4" tall the screen feels less cramped.

I now mainly play on a 55" OLED TV I use as a monitor.

I would like another ultrawide but I want 21"9 with 2160 vertical pixels with a height of around 16". Since they don't exist and may never exist I could be done with using monitors altogether.

Playing the same game at different resolutions give you different experiences. I can't play on 1080p now and it has nothing to do with boredom for me. Yes, I was bored of playing at 1080p, but I wasn't bored of games.

This. I think 1440p is the sweet spot and with a nice IPS you can still get 144hz (or more) and still get g or free sync. The MS is all from 1-4 (I personally see no difference from 1 - 4 ms) But the difference from a 1080p to 1440p is crazy, I don´t see much if any from 1440p to 4k.

Atm sweetspot for me is 1440p 27" with 144hz and various extra´s if you want that.. IPS for me, since I really love the colours!!

Anything over 1080p 60hz isn't worth it imo. I have a 144hz monitor and the only benefit might be better reaction times in R6S.
