Ryzen 5 3600 or wait for 4000 series

Hi everyone,

I want to upgrade from an i5 4690. Is the 3600 still worth it or should I wait for the 4000 series?

Wait for zen 3 unless you absolutely need an upgrade now.

I think this depends - what is your current build, what do you currently run, and what kind of budget are you working with.

Why does this matter ? If anything OP will have up more.

You can make a significantly better decision if you can weight out the OPs needs rather than just suggesting that OP waits.

Should OP wait for Zen3 and upgrade to the 4000 series or should OP wait and buy a Zen2 that comes down significantly in price? I've got no idea if OP is planning on just buying a CPU and motherboard or if they will need/want a new GPU, PSU, RAM, etc...maybe OP will still be on a budget and pairing a higher end Zen2 + a x570 will be better value for them...

So yeah, it kind of matters depending on what OP wants to do with their current setup.

Currently have a gtx 1060 and my fps are little too low. I would like to have constantly 144 fps but now it's sometimes under it in games like csgo overwatch and valorant. I can wait for a few months. My budget is about 200 dollar

Yeah so there are a few things at play here:

  1. For your budget the Ryzen 5 3600 is still out of reach, waiting until Zen3 will push the prices down. But since you'd need to swap your motherboard to move to AMD it's going to be worth it to save a bit more to put a larger budget behind it.
  2. I wouldn't expect Zen3 cpu's/motherboards to be cheap - but there will be good value for x570 + a 3600 either brand new or used
  3. If you could also consider a newer GPU that would go a long way

Personally, I didn't wait and recently got a 3600 myself. It will still be a relevant CPU for a while now and will run just about anything you can throw at it. Yes you can wait, spend more money and have a better (we hope) CPU and motherboard. But in the long run it is up to you. Based on your budget and current system specs, you care going to have to save more anyway to replace both CPU and motherboard since you want to switch from Intel to AMD.

I'll just wait for Zen 3 and see how much it costs. If it's too expensive I'll just buy the 3600. If my fps is still a little too with a new cpu low I'll also upgrade my gpu.

Yea I don't think I need anything better than a 3600 but if zen 3 won't be that much more expensive that would be a better choice I think.

For me I'll wait for the 4000 series since the Ryzen 5 3600 is in great shortage in my country due to the covid.

A lot of people went for PC building after getting the government subsidy and the new supply comes after at least 1-2 weeks.

Hopefully after releasing the 4000 series you can get a build with greater value or go for the 3600 after price cut.
BTW, the B550 is prbably the last generation for the AM4 CPU socket. Since both of them supports the coming 4000 series, the B450 Motherboard is expected to be have greater value. B450 is more than enough if you are just normal pc user.
