current gen core i5 models have 6 cores 12 threads, not 6 cores 6 threads, and also have a slightly better upgrade path.

 

AMD soundly beat Intel when it comes to 3rd gen Ryzen vs 9th gen.

Yes, there's the Comet Lake i5s, but why only Intel? Frankly, it makes no sense to go with Comet Lake in an $800 build.

At $800 a 3300x/3600 will perform much better.

The 10600k is one of the best gaming CPUs available.
If he lives near a Microcenter, they're quite reasonable.

I agree that it is, and I frequently recommend it for gaming-only builds, its just that the price difference is about $50 IIRC, which is a big jump for a $800 build.

If you already have it, it's good and will continue to be good for a couple of years. I have a 6700k in my desktop build and it does everything I need it to, only chugging at 100% in some CPU heavy games like AC Odyssey. 

 

But if you upgrade to anything AMD, it'll fall behind in everything, like it should, being a lower end Intel part.

Ah, I didn't see his previous thread.

The only CPU that makes sense in an $800 build IMO is the 3300x.

Thing basically performs as well as a 3900x in most games.

why, when you get more performance in an AMD build for your budget of $800? 

 

If you're not spending extra on a Z490 board to get some DDR4 3200, you are going to getting worse frames in games.

Uhh...the i5-10400 is not worth it.

It gets crushed by a 3300X in gaming...because it gets bottlenecked by Intel locking down the CPU, and RAM frequency to DDR4-2666.

 

If you are going to get an Intel CPU, and a 10th Gen one, either get the i5-10600K / KF, or i9-10900K / KF.

Otherwise, AMD Ryzen 3300X / 3600 / 3700X / 3900X.

Yes. The best upgrade on this deal would be getting a 9900K or 9900KF. That would hold you over a long time. All core 5ghz, pretty straight forward and easy. 

 

Building an all new AMD system would be a gross waste of money period. 

 

Edit, no the 10 series isn't really faster than the 9th gen.... clock for clock they are the same. Intel is just trying to compete with threads at this point.

im not looking to spend more than 200 on a cpu tho..
