1400 dollar pc for friend

pibs

My friend needs a new pc and he usually talks to me when he has tech questions. So I’m posting here now because I actually haven’t followed up with pcs much in the past year or so.

Budget (including currency): 1400 usd

Country: usa

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: gaming and basic 1080p video editing

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): He will play at 4K 60hz, He will buy probably a week after I post this, he’s upgrading from, amd phenom ii x6 1090t, 8 gb ddr2 800mhz, gtx 970, Windows 8.1,

Also He didn’t realize that his gtx 970 couldn’t handle 4K gaming until he already bought his monitor, He was kinda dumb at the time. He also found out that the rest of his system is crap as well so he started saving up for a new one.

also it includes windows from Microsoft because he doesn’t trust those cheap windows keys. I tried to convince him that it’s fine but he doesn't want to change his mind about it no matter what I say.

I made a pcpartpicker for him

I would get a 5700xt instead of the 2070 super (unless they want ray tracing or nvec encoding) and use those savings to get a bigger ssd (1 tb version)

Other than that, great build.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Quote or tag me so I can see your response

For the PCPartPicker:

  • 212 EVO has been eclipsed by other units. Look at something from Noctua, or the Arctic Freezr 34 if you're on a strict budget.
  • Don't buy a top tier graphics card right now. We're maybe 3 months away from the release of new ones. He can use the 970 in the meantime.
  • I'd strongly suggest a 1TB SSD. If he doesn't need mass storage immediately, ditch the 500GB/2TB set up and just get the 1TB in the interim until he can save $60 for more storage.
  • Some might suggest waiting for 4th gen Ryzen. The performance jump won't be that great, and it'll be more expensive.

He doesn’t specifically want certain features but he told me that he trusts nvidia better, so I put in the 2070 super instead of the 5700xt. They both give similar performance anyway

So, I'm not really sure what you are on about.

It doesn’t matter, I did tell him that cheap windows keys are fine but he won’t accept one of them so I can’t do anything about it.

Ditch the cheap 500gb NVME ssd for a Samsung one, they are much better

You realize Samsung is a brand, ssds from many other company’s use the same controllers and have the similar caches.

just because samsung is more expensive doesn’t mean it’s better.

Yeah, the performance is similar but the 5700xt is $100 less. But if they want Nvidia, only thing I would change would be getting a bigger ssd.

He’s fine with any kind of cooling, he won’t overclock, also he wants to transfer the files from his old pc to his new one, which it exceeds 1tb, also he’s more concerned about getting a pc now than waiting for better performance.

Again, you can't be that stupid. Most of these people did not pay for the OEM key.

Clearly you don't even know how it works, or how software in general works.

He is. The 3060 will have the same performance, thus, he'd be overpaying by an entire product class.

Or, with the same money, getting significantly better performance.

He can run his monitor at 1080p for the whole three months it takes for them to come out.

I think I know how it works, Windows is somewhat limited without activating it, but what you’re seeming to miss is he bought an oem key which is paying for *A RESOLD OEM KEY*

I know a lot of people just don’t activate it in general, but you don’t seem to have read what I have been saying in general so you clearly don’t have the right to be out here saying “you can’t be that stupid”

Ok, I’ll tell him that it’s a better idea to buy the pc, without the graphics card and keep his 970 for a little bit, then upgrade his gpu to the 500$ gpu in the next generation.

thats the better bet, im holding up on buying a pc as well, coz im waiting for new AMD and Nvidia cards as well as Ryzen 4000. the 970 will hold up well for 1080p for now lmao.

also, why is 4k gaming such a necessity?

😕

🤔 So a 550 watt power supply for a GPU that recommends a 650 watt PSU? How is that not just asking for trouble?

because the 2070 super doesn't actually eat anywhere near enough wattage to make it needed?

It’s not super important, he just wants to take full advantage of his monitor

🤔 Well I know about the TDP, its always two or three times lower than the recommended. People suggest power supplies based on the "actual" average power consumption, and then they almost always come back to sites like this complaining about the computer crashing under load, because they thought they had "enough". I'm also not sold on Furmark as an accurate indication or representation of how the PC as a whole will perform under load since it does almost nothing with the CPU or the ram.
