Internet in detached garage

kennedyl94

I bought my house a few years ago, and I have a cheep 2.4/5ghz wifi router that doesn't quite reach to my garage. With everything going on I have been spending a lot of time in my garage doing lots of projects like wood working, maintenance on the cars, etc. I often  need to look up things for reference or a tutorial video and I would rather be on wifi. I do not believe a wire line adapter would work. I don't have a circuit with outlets both inside and in the garage.

I could dig a trench and run a cable underground but I feel like that is a lot of work, and I would still need another router or access point anyways.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a general router/wifi upgrade. Maybe something that I can set up multiple access points easily. I was thinking I could have one access point inside and an outdoor one I could on the exterior wall of my house so I can get a signal in my yard and garage.

To clarify, you do, or do not have power outlets in the garage?

Yes I have power in the garage.

My understanding with power line adapter is that they need to be on the same circuit (same breaker in the panel). Feel free to correct me If my understanding is wrong.

I have two circuits going to the garage but no outlets in the house are on those circuits.

Yeah a powerline adapter likely will not work. But a mesh network probably will, I would look into some mesh network options. My router is my basement utility room, I have a 2 station mesh network and it does an amazing job of boosting signal. Much better than a WiFi booster, all the ones I have used are pretty well useless in my experience.

Trust me on this one, it is worth it.

So with this I just set it up like a second router? I am skimming through the instructions and it doesn't look like I need any special equipment for it. It's just powered by POE and has the adapter included with it.

This might be what I go with. What's the realistic range on this?

It is usually used for point to point connections (one in one building and another in one building) but it should work as an access point (make sure that it is possible before buying one). Just keep in mind that it is 5 Ghz Only. Since the theoretical range is 15 Km (9.3 mi) if you point it directly to your garage and the garage is not made of concrete and within 5 mi (ish) you should be able to get good coverage. If it is made out of concrete or if you have 2.4 Ghz only devices you could put two outside (one in the garage and one in your house) and connect it to an access point or a router acting as an access point to get wifi.

Here is a good video on this model

(same breaker in the panel)

I have a powerline Ethernet plug between my Garage and Ground Floor Sockets and it works absolutely fine even though it's on a different RCD control, so unless you're 100% sure all of the cables are physically discrete between the house and garage then there's a possibility it'll work!

@kennedyl94

Should you choose to go with the wireless bridge setup, which I think is overkill for a detached building, you'll still need good line of sight, be able run wires on each end, mount the bridging APs and wire in a separate AP for WiFi distribution in the garage. Furthermore, those airMax NanoBeam devices create that bridge with similar airMax devices on a specific WiFi band, so you can't use them singly to "throw WiFi" at your garage. They work best if both ends utilize the proprietary airMax technology.

If you're willing to put in all the work for a wireless bridge but the garage is only a few metres away from the house, running ethernet from the primary router to an access point in the garage is going to much simpler and perhaps cheaper.

Depends where the OP is. Here in the US our power comes in on two wires, each wire feeds half the breakers. So if one adapter is on one side and the other is one the other side that can cause huge performance loss from what I have read. Generally a garage would have a breaker in the main panel which powers an electrical panel in the garage and from there, there would be separate breakers for the garages use. Remember to, power line adapters are distance limited to an extent, so if the length the signal has to go thru is great, then the OP could be up a creek without a paddle.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Ubiquiti Nanobeams are great for this type of application. 500+ Meter range, good speed. Easy to setup, and once in place generally maintenance free. I use Nanobeam devices on a number of outbuildings connecting back to a larger sector style antenna. No issues.

Though if the distance is less than say 100M you could also just mount an outdoor grade Access Point on your exterior of your house and likely reach your garage with a much simpler installation. My Wireless AP reaches my garage no problem, and I have mine in my basement, not ideal I know but it hits the garage with full signal.

I use the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR Access point. The only real downside is that you need the Controller software to configure and secure the AP properly. I have it running on my home server and it works fine. I had it on my personal desktop as well without issue.

There are other Access Points on the market so shop around. I just happen to like the Ubiquiti equipment a lot and it hasn't let me down yet.

I also have a UAP-AC-LR I get good wifi all round my block and about two houses down outside. Some of ubiquiti's directional stuff is also useful for your application and would work better than a standard AP.
