Transfer files between two Win10 computers via USB - C

I just bought a new laptop with USB-C. My currently laptop also have thunderbolt3/USB-C. I was wondering how I could move files from my current laptop to my new laptop using USB-C. I plugged in a cable into both laptops and nothing appeared in explorer, so I'm assuming that I am overlooking something.

 

Suggestions?

I was trying to avoid that as I have about 400 gb worth of stuff I need to move over. That would take a while.

53.3 minutes over 1Gbps connection. Not too long.

Assuming you don't have small files and it sustains a fully saturated link. If there are tons of small files it will take MUCH longer

There are a lot of small files as I do a lot of media work. 

 

Which is why ideally I would prefer to do it over usb. Both devices support USB 3.1 over the type c port. Might take long, but in theory should be shorter than doing it over wifi direct or over the network

That is not how USB works. The above responses recommending network are the easiest solution. Your computer expects a passive USB device on the other end, not an active component likle a computer. It is not designed to do what you want to do. In the past I used a special USB cable to exchange stuff with a friend that way but it had some extra hardware in it and you needed a driver.

That is probably what I am overlooking. Just assumed that because the port was bi-directional that something like that would be possible

If both support thunderbolt mode, there should be a "thunderbolt ethernet adapter" present, but I've never actually tried this. I know it was possible with firewire. If it's only USB, it should still create a USB-Bridge device in device manager, but again, this may require a specific cable, not just passive accessory cable.

Note that these are almost always USB 2.0 devices. Connecting two machines by GigE is faster.

I'll have to research it a bit more. Thanks. This is a start in the right direction

The way I'd do it is to remove the old drive and put it into a USB enclosure. 

 

Probably not the most efficient way, but simple.

Probably. My old laptop is an xps15. Fairly easy to work in. I'd need to find an enclosure for it. Something I completely overlooked to be honest
