Used Vega 56 vs GTX 1070

drt0

Hey, I'm looking at used GPUs and towards the top of my budget are the Vega 56 and GTX 1070.

The models I've found are PowerColor Red Devil Vega 56 (165 euro) and Gigabyte GTX 1070 Windforce (130 euro). Which one would you recommend? I'm leaning toward the Vega personally.

the 1070. they are on par in performance but the vega 56 uses much more power and heats a lot more.

Edit: vega is 5-10% faster but again much more power and heat. and it is more expensive than the 1070. get the 1070.

The Vega 56 is better, but the price difference is too high to justify the performance gap. In that case I'd lean towards the 1070.

If you have a preference towards either chip manufacture go for that. Performance is near enough in the same ball park it doesn't matter. I own blower versions of cards with both, and the Vega is way hotter. The PowerColor does seem to have a decent cooler on that so it might help offset it. If it was my money, I'd get the 1070.

How much of a $/Euro difference would you put between the cards? The 1070 seller wants to send it with a 15min test period which will up the delivery cost and the other 1070 offers are around 150 euro. The Vega I will be able to test in person so I feel more comfortable with that I think.

then at the end of the day

they will both cost the same and the 56 seller sounds more trust worthy

go for the 56 imo

The Vega is about 10% faster and since you can test it, it would be a safer bet. I'd go with that. The 1070's 15 min test period is extremely sketchy.

Any suggestions what I should check physically on the Vega or what test I can run (hopefully something that can run off of a flash drive)?

Basically same performance according to Techpowerup (that actually made tests, it's not a synthetic result).

I would buy Vega 56 not because it's a little more faster, but mainly because Windforce models are terrible and suffers a lot with thermal throttling. It's a nightmare. If you can find another 1070 model and cheaper like you found this Windforce, maybe it worth the money saved.
