Is this PSU good enough? 6pin to 8pin question

newbie900000

**first post**

Just got my "new" build it has a weird PSU by Seasonic probably a server psu, 500w seems alright but my main question is regarding 6-pin to 8-pin adapters since this PSU comes with a 6-pin PCIe and my Rx480 requires a 8pin connector, can i get by with using a adapter or should i get my PSU changed (not quite possible atm due to lockdown in my city)

PSU: ss-500et active pfc f3

I would get the PSU changed since it probs will blow up or smthn and and the 6 to 8 pin exists

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

Not a server CPU, just a really cheaply made one. I wouldn't put anything expensive on it. The adapters do exist, but keep in mind that this allows more power on the 6-pin than the PSU was designed for. It will work for the time being, but I would at least get a decent PSU with a native 8-pin, as soon as you can.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

It's a lower tier, quite old, PSU.

You *could* use it, via a 2x 6-pin to 8-pin PCI-E adapter, but not recommended...due to it's lower build quality and age.

Seasonic is not a bad brand, but they do have their budget / low-grade PSUs, and high-end units.

Better to upgrade the PSU to be on the safe side...just a piece of mind.

A 450W ~ 550W will be enough for a typical gaming system paired with an RX-480.

yeah i was hoping to use the adapter till things ease up in my country due to covid and i can get it changed (plus the prices of pc components are pretty high nowadays due to a shortage of supply)

Yikes!

By "new" I guess you mean "new to you" since that PSU is an antique.
