Possible upgrade to Ryzen

GigabitXe

I've been running and i5-4430 for many years now, and I am beginning to feel it lag behind in my workflow, which includes 1080p gaming, video editing, and video encoding. With the release of the B550 chipset and the features it brings I feel like it is a good time to go for Ryzen. My plan is to upgrade the core of my system (CPU, GPU, RAM, motherboard) with these parts as I am keeping my case, power supply, and storage. I then plan on selling my current parts to my brother, who is just beginning to get into PC gaming, which are outlined here. Things marked as purchased are the parts I am selling my brother.  My question is twofold. 1) Are the parts I picked out a good match? 2) would it be worth stepping up to a higher end motherboard that had 2.5G LAN and slightly better I/O? I have no use for 2.5G lan at the moment but I feel like it might be useful in the future. I was looking and the B550M Mortar from MSI for $159. All my prices are USD and my budget is flexible, but I am looking for the best value.

That’s a good idea. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that before. 😂

The mortar does appear to be a great board and would have no problem handling any higher end parts on the AM4 platform. Although I haven't seen any reviews of the aorus b550m, that $109 price seems like a bargain.

As far as the other parts, they all look like solid options, although I would try and get 3600mhz or 3200mhz memory if it's not much more expensive

PC

Ryzen 5 2600 Stock

Sapphire Nitro+ Special Edition Radeon RX580 8GB (Would Recommend)

Gigabyte B450M DS3H (Don't recommend)

Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition

Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4 3000MHz CL15

Phanteks P300 (Would Recommend)

Kingston A400 240GB SSD

Seagate BarraCuda 1TB HDD

Corsair CX550M 550W  80+ Bronze

Deepcool FH-10 Fan Hub

3x BeQuiet Pure Wings 2

Thanks. I found a 16gb kit of 3600 for a few dollars more but it has cas 18 latency. I don’t know much about memory latency, is that a big deal or am I better off with 3200 at cas 16?

3600 at cl 18 should be better. The other kit is still good though, so only get the 3600mhz if it's no more than 5-10 dollars more

  • I'd probably look for a better cooler. IIRC there are a few that are only a few dollars more but offer much better performance.
  • I'd replace your PSU. Yours isn't that good, and if it's past it's warranty it's time for it to be replaced.
  • I wouldn't bother buying something based on "I don't need it now but who knows maybe in the future..." Buy for what you need now, you can upgrade later; if it's not in your mind right now, you probably won't end up doing it before it's time to upgrade again.

Thanks for the feedback. Is there a specific reason that I should replace the PSU? I have never had any issues with it and from all the reviews everybody else says that its reliable. Also, do you have any recommendations for a different cooler? All of the recommended coolers that I found were way more than the 212, and a lot of people say the 212 is fine for the 3600.

If the warranty is over, that means it's reached the end of what the company has tested as it's most reliable life. They do extensive testing and will warranty a product for as long as they can before it becomes uneconomical for them, so if the warranty is up your chance of a failure goes up as well. If it's as old as your system, then it's an aging unit; like most things, they have finite life spans.

I guess that makes sense. My PSU is definitely past warranty as I built my system in 2016 and I think it only had a 3 year warranty. Is this a suitable replacement? https://pcpartpicker.com/product/cTfhP6/be-quiet-pure-power-11-500-w-80-gold-certified-atx-power-supply-bn901

Ahhh ok that's not too bad, I thought you'd bought it new in which case your PSU would have been pushing 7 years.

I don't know much about that one, but if you Google LTT PSU Tier List, they have a database and you can see where it falls in that.
