Twofold, a dual ITX system.

Lord Pantaloons

I got caught up with some errands earlier and now it's too late to be cutting on the case. Hopefully my back will be up top finishing the case tomorrow, on a side-ish note I picked up some power switches that have some big ass buttons that will thrill me greatly when I push them.

sounds sweet! what buttons did you get?

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The RPS metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches.

Only Abate, Axe, and Wobbles can save us.

Just some random buttons that were off of a pair of identical cases that broke at a local PC shop. There were a couple of bucks a piece but I would have spend about as much to order some and they wouldn't have has super big buttons attached to them on a side note the shop I was at is horrible I'll post some pics of some stuff along with a picture of the buttons I bought.

Before you ask, yes these prices were correct.

Maybe, I think I've got my plan pretty well sorted out at this point.

I did some cutting today, I removed the metal bits that were part of the things that held the I/O bracket in place(much descriptive) and I did my best to grind it down and smooth it out. It's not perfect but it's good enough to do what I need to do. It turns out that I made a good call to remove that bracket because with the motherboards in and the GPU's installed there is literally ZERO room left. The GPU on the first motherboard will be sitting up against the 24 pin on the second motherboard so despite it being much more work than I thought it would be to remove the bracket and the other bits it was worth doing it because I pretty much had to. Now onto the bad news, I had planned on finishing the cutting and drilling the hole for the motherboard but out of all the drill bits I have only two will fit my dremel and one of them I wore out drilling out rivets and I just killed me second one trying to drill through the motherboard tray so my plan to try to actually physically finish Twofold today fell through as I can't drill holes for the standoff's. I have no ETA on the next update as I don't know if I'll be able to bum a power drill off someone or if I'll be forced to buy one.

Here are some pictures of the cuts/grinding that I did today, keep in mind I'm no expert so it isn't pretty but I got the job done.

Update (and it's a big one)

First off I bought a power drill, I got impatient and I was at the store anyways so I got it just so I wouldn't have to bum one off somebody. I also bought some drill bits that were meant to drill through metal so I wouldn't have a repeat of last night.

uvMKhwF.jpg

The drill made the next part very quick, drilling the holes for the standoffs was easy, as was mounting the first motherboard once I figured out how to make the standoff's themselves.

BusEfn7.jpg

However I realized very quickly that the amount of various screws/bolts/washers that I had bought the previous day was not sufficient to do what I needed to do because my initial idea for the motherboard standoffs wasn't going to work and my new (working) idea required more parts per standoff. Unfortunately my friend was borrowing my truck and my mom was at an adoption event, if I lived anywhere else that would most likely be an issue. Not so much with my current address, ACE Hardware is well within walking distance of my house.

It's just up my driveway

6qFcDcp.jpg

Down my street(hardly can be called a street I know)

6pcCUyq.jpg

Onto a secondary to up to a 4 way stop

Across the main road

And right to ACE Hardware

308bQte.jpg

That quick trip to the store was very well worth it(even though I hate walking) because with the extra bits and pieces I picked up I was able to quickly assemble the rest of the rig without too much trouble.

xwNrhN7.jpg

iufmBwf.jpg

In the next two pictures you can see exactly how close this build was to not happening. It was so tight that I had to remove the little clips from the 24 pin connectors for the boards to fit side by side with two dual slot GPU's.

ZYC6kxw.jpg

mTjCqnc.jpg

Here you can see the I/O in it's new location at the top of the motherboard tray, the idea is to cut the other side panel to gain access to the I/O but for now I'll just be running the cables through the hole where the PSU would normally be mounted in this case. This won't be the case later as I'll modify the panel according to my plan.

DNxy39h.jpg

Here is the system, fully assembled for the most part. There are a few more things left to do which I'll detail at the end of this post. I'm going to try to do something with the cable management but I don't really think there's much that can be done as the 24/4pin cables on these PSU's are very short.

oqUo12u.jpg

Now here's where the bad news comes in, despite me being able to install an OS on the 120GB WD HDD it seems to be partially dead as it causes BSOD's occasionally when I try to write something to the drive. I'm not surprised honestly though, out of the two sata drives I have I was far more concerned about that drive being flaky than I was about the Barracuda. It turns out that I was right about it after all. It's not that big of a deal though, I'm just going to get another cheap drive around 120-160GB to replace it with but for the time being only one of the two systems in Twofold is usable. Aside from replacing the HDD I still want to make a few more minor mods to the case itself but I really need a break from all this as I have a bad back and this much activity and constant picking up/moving parts is really tough on my back. I'll be sure to update this thread when I make more progress on Twofold.

Thanks for sticking with me on this and feel free to post any suggestions or comments because there's no real concrete plan for Twofold in it's physical form or it's intended function so I'm totally open to any idea's (within reason) that you guys might have. I can post more pictures if you guys want, I know the picture of the fully assembled system wasn't great but I'm no photographer. I can try to get some nicer ones though if it's really something that you all are interested in.

Sincerely,

Lord Pantaloons the Third of Douchecanoe, DD

UPDATE

So I know that I mentioned modifying the back side panel so that cables from the I/O can come out of it and I've finally gotten around to doing it, once again this isn't going to be pretty the goal is to get this done then worry about aesthetics later(maybe never).

Marking out the cut

After the cut and some grinding

Now with it on the case

Now with some cables plugged in.

That's pretty much it for this update, thanks for reading.

I also put the front panel back on and cleaned up the cable management, maybe I'll post pics of that too but I forgot to take some.

I've been thinking about it, like I've said before Twofold isn't quite done yet. There are still a few things I want to do and the other system isn't running yet as I don't have a hard drive for it.

Update (it's a small one so I only used normal text)

I changed the oreintation of the HD cage so that I could clean up the wiring a bit and I think it looks much better like it is now, I also put the front bezel back on(after some modification) and did a really ghetto hidden switch thing.

Here's Twofold before

Here's Twofold after

Also check out my hidden power switches lol

  • 2 weeks later...

A small update for you guys, I just bought another hard drive for Twofold. It's a Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB, it's supposed to get here next Thursday so I'll get that installed when it does then Twofold will be 100% operational. Speaking of which I would like to put the 250GB drive on the Win7 half of Twofold and transfer the 160GB to the half that I plan to have XP on, what is a good piece of OS drive cloning software that's free  (or that can be "acquired") so I don't have to reinstall Win7 on the new drive.
