FBI has charged 6 former eBay executives & employees with lurid stalking

Jet_ski

Apparently a couple were critical of eBay in their online marketing newsletter. So eBay executives and employees began harassing them by sending them live cockroaches, a pig head in a bloody Halloween mask, and even subscribing to pornographic magazines in their name and having it shipped to their neighbors. But here's the kicker, eBay then used a "white knight" strategy by informing the couple of what was happening and offering to help them!!!! This went up as high as eBay's Chief Communication Officer Devin Wenig, who left the company in September even though eBay's internal investigation supposedly didn't find him guilty.

Quote

In our experience, we have not seen something like this, at least not recently... This case really stood out for us, both for the effort to intimidate and terrorize the couple, and the extent ... the goal and, at least as alleged in the complaint, the really elaborate steps taken to effectuate that goal.

-U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew E. Lelling

Quote

They also sent pizza to the couple’s home at 4:30 a.m. and also advertised a fake yard sale that told people to just go into the house if no one was outside, as well as swingers parties, telling people to show up at the home after 10 p.m. for the sex parties.

Eventually, Lelling said, four of the six people charged flew from California to Massachusetts to put the couple under surveillance. They then attempted to break into the couple’s garage to put a GPS on their vehicle so they could track them.

-MetroWestDailyNews

Quote

According to Lelling, “The boxes included: fly larvae and live spiders; a box of live cockroaches; a sympathy wreath on the occasion of a dead loved one; a book of advice on how to survive the death of a spouse; pornography mailed to their neighbors but in the couple’s names; a Halloween mask featuring the face of a bloody pig and a pig fetus that was ordered but after an inquiry from the supplier thankfully was never sent.”

-TechCrunch

Baugh, 45, was eBay’s senior director of safety and security. Harville, 48, was the company’s director of global resiliency. Both have been arrested.

While I don't agree with stalking that's not exactly creepy, and they stole most of those ideas.   There are better methods of traumatizing someone.

Does not the idea that eBay knows more about you than law enforcement does not send chills down your spine?

eBay (and Paypal) know every place you've ever lived. That's more than your wireless carrier does.

That’s not exactly creepy?

For a company’s employees to literally harass a couple and intentionally send pranks or psych-out items to their home - to send embarrassing things intentionally to their neighbours?

People go to jail over less. That is very creepy. And a little disturbing. Those employees need psychological help. For fucks sake one of them was Director of safety and security.

Amen. It dosen;t matter how any individual person reading this feels or would geel, what matters was that it was distressing, and upsetting to those being targeted and a wholly inappropriate use of resources and access by those responsible.

To each their own, but what you find creepy isn't exactly creepy to everyone.   Harassment isn't creepy, but it is illegal.   So is stalking.  Prank ideas they stole from movies isn't exactly original to me nor creepy.

It’s absurd to describe what happened here as prank.

To be fair I did describe some of the actions as “pranks or psych-out items”. It’s hard to describe exactly what they did in a way that doesn’t mitigate the seriousness.

I was responding to him calling it that.   But again, most of these are pranks and fear tactics from old movies, but people responding differently and have different views on things like this.   It probably concerns most more than it does me, but as I did mention I am less senstive towards these things for various reasons.   Asperger's Syndrome causes one to respond differently than what is seen as a norm.   Secondly, due to having it and not getting along with "normal" people I've desensitized myself thanks to the darker parts of the internet, history, and so on.   This sort of thing is normal to me while it's far more concerning to you.   To me it's not even original which makes it far less concerning.

And to this point, because all things are possible, these shouldn't be wholly surprising.

Showing disfavor with something is liable to get a reaction. This reaction is less common, but not unheard of.

eBay is a scummy company to begin with. They haven't innovated on anything ecommerce related since 2012, and continue to raise fees and buyer expectations to compete with Amazon, even though eBay buying and selling is a fundamentally different kind of experience than going through Amazon.

eBay: Don't try to be something you're not.

Exactly!

But, have you looked at Craiglist for PC parts lately? It's absurd what people are asking for! And most of the stuff is junk. I think the only thing worth reasonable value is networking gear. SMH.

Beep, wrong. The real source is Lexisnexis, which both eBay and Paypal use for anti-fraud. I can assure you they use that service unless they suddenly decided not to due to GDPR.

The credit bureaus know your address, employer and who you bank with, but eBay and Paypal know every single Address you've ever lived at or logged in from.

As it was explained one day "The Fraud team treats certain cities, streets, even buildings as suspect."

You and I clearly have different mindsets as I mentioned.

No, not really.  See, that is a concept of fear which Norsemen lack.  But, murder has nothing to do with this, and you're all jumping to conclusions and skewing things because of your own fears.

im not that afraid of death itself if someone points a gun at my family or my gf ill step in front without hesitation there are many things i fear more than death but that doesnt mean im going to be a dumbass and not try to get out of risky situations. if a psychopath is sending me random shit im going to not open anymore packages and im going to call the police. if not for me i owe it to the people that care about me

Ya, it's rather normal for high ranking people to have egos like this.  Hideo Kojima threw a tantrum because a game journalist didn't like his game.  He pretty much went of his way to slander them, threatened legal action over their opinion, and even went as far as trying to get them fired.  People put these people on pedestals, but don't realize how insecure and childish these people actually are to a criminal level.  Or, they just don't care.

Reminds me a bit about Donald Trump who sued a journalist who estimated Trump‘s money to be around 300 millions and not as Donald says several billions
