You wouldn't download a Manga would you? - Japan tightens manga piracy laws

8 hours ago, williamcll said:

The law also regulates “leech websites” that provide users hyperlinks to download so-called torrent files of pirated materials.

Ah, so they've now banned any legit uses of BitTorrent files. Idiots.

Ironically that video being on YouTube is technically pirating/copyright infringing the original but I digress :D.

Also, as much as I despise pirating and think it is morally reprehensible, I fundamentally completely disagree that pirating is stealing.

Think Manga might have to jump to the subscription model (ala Netflix for Manga) if companies really want to clamp down on Piracy.

People tend to take the path of least resistance, and pricing Manga at $10 (or w/e that is in Yen) provides a lot of resistance.

Nah, the majority of Manga is still around 500 yen (approx $4.5) so definitely not $10 ;)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Yeah, slapping "gaijin tax" and import taxes means anywhere that's not Japan will result in domestic items to have a sharp increase in cost. Good thing I go back to Japan on a yearly (or 2-yearly) basis then, not that I usually buy manga as I don't read it :P

if you don't want me to pirate allow me to get it other way, it's pretty simple, isn't it?

big companies have to wake up and realize pirate sites offer higher quality of service for lower price, often allowing their users to access media unavailable in their region otherwise

They really still don't get it, do they? You can't stop it, only inconvenience the pirates, for a time.

I assumed it was already banned, I mean, even the article mentions the closure of a pirate site.

I  actually think that it can influence the availability of less popular manga on the Internet, so I'm not happy, but on the other hand decreased sales may make more artists publish stuff themselves on Patreon etc.

Seriously I don't know why Japan would go through all the trouble to make these laws. After all the reality is that manga sites and translation groups are already walking in the dark side and while the Japan government might think this will be a huge speed bump on the highway of manga piracy, at most these are just a crack in the asphalt and probably on the wrong highway. If Netflix has already very bad library of movies and series here in Finland (IIRC at some point we had the 2nd worst library in the world), you don't even want to know how bad the manga selection is (IIRC Berserk is 3-5 volumes behind even EU releases because publishing rights and that is around 5-10 years (even more since the world gets 2-5 chapters per year at the current rate)). Not only that but comics generally here are under the rocks like you wander out from the normal Donald Duck, Finnish comics or general DC/Marvel/Disney stuff, you are looking for speciality stores which are uncommon and bare their prices or go to the online and be happy that you can even order with the insane packaging and postage fees. Like even give me a legal choice and I could think about that :D

Availability and price of that availability are the things companies do the worst, especially with any kind of media. "But but but but publishing rights" If companies possible customers go and pirate their stuff because there even isn't a legal way to get it is the problem:
A) The company you sold the publishing rights is piece of shit and costs you customers

B) You not publishing your stuff so people can pay for it is bad strategy

or

C) People are shit because they can't wait X years so they can buy your now old stuff

Probably everyone choose the option C so I don't feel bad to pirate your content because you think I'm a shit in the first place, so then I will be a real shit. "If I'm going to the hell anyway, I might go down as a legend"

In France, it costs between 6.99 € and 7.99 € (and few mangas cost more than 8 €). It's good price because they are translated to french language :) (France is the second largest consumer of manga in the world, behind Japan)

And the digital version translated usually costs 4.99 €.

I looked at 3 Manags (I've stopped buying them years ago), 2 of which printed in Canada, one USA.

So one could call the licensing costs a gaijin tax, however licensing is common all around the world and not just this situation, now if the costs are obviously higher then that difference itself can be called the gaijin tax. However there is a higher overhead here as well.

No, they are trying to stop illegal sites from linking to torrents, not trying to kill the torrent protocol itself. I guess IRC will start to reign again if they are successful, they won't be however as the article does mention it is going to be very hard w/o invading privacy and international hosting.

All they have to do is offer an actual place where you can read multiple publications mangas and have translate them faster than current user translator groups do. But they fail to do this and so we continue to rely on translation groups to cover the slack.

There's a reason piracy exists, and it's something that's been pretty evident since Napster (well, way before Napster when you'd have bootleg VHS tapes and such).

Either there is an issue with price, or with distribution/access.

A perfect example is an old site like Discount Anime DVD. I pulled an archive shot here to illustrate. Not only did you have a large anime marketplace with manga, DVDs, merchandise, etc... it's all showcased in related sections to what you're viewing.

Now, they got in trouble because they sold import DVDs that included bootlegged versions co-mingled with legit versions, among a few other things. NA rights holders also didn't enjoy the circumvention of people getting imports on their turf vs. their local versions. While they operated, I used them for plenty of merchandise and import DVDs that I could not find anywhere else, except maybe through a random eBay listing.

And that's the crux of the problem. If legitimate services were as convenient and fair in pricing, there would be far less need to pirate anything.

The other thing that hampers a fix is the ridiculous fragmentation with distributors and rights holders. Consumer lives outside Japan and likes mangas X, Y, and Z. However, X, Y, and Z are held be separate distributors who operate separate websites and only sell physical media through certain channels.

If Japanese companies didn't shove off translation and other aspects, that would eliminate another popular reason for piracy. Fansubs have existed for a very long time, and primarily because it took forever for a legit version to ever reach consumers. A fansub gets released hours after airing in Japan vs. regular fans having to wait for a distributor to even get the rights to a show after gauging interest, then produce, manufacture and ship it.

Ultimately as consumers, there should be easy ways to purchase legitimate products in several ways. If I want a manga, I should be able to buy anything produced in physical form, downloadable form, and/or a combo option as soon as it's released for the primary consumers. For anime (and regular western TV and movies), I should be able to purchase physical media, downloadable media and/or be able to stream it.

This article is about domestic piracy in Japan. It's unrelated to the foreign market.

I'm surprised it's that big a deal, because outside of big mainstream manga, finding raws is a pain. Manga is so cheap and easy to get in Japan I can't see that much of a reason to pirate it.

If it was easier to get manga locally then I wouldn't have to pirate, but right now the price unacceptable. I don't read that much manga anyway so it's not a big deal for me.
