Running Monitor and Peripherals over long distance

Hello there,

 

I am planning on running a vm on an unraid server, and am looking for a solution to connect my monitors and usb devices to the server. I have thought about thunderbolt but its just way too expensive for the distance I need (30m).

 

Any advice would be great,

HDMI 2.0 & USB 2.0/3.1 can reach up to 30m depending. You can also get a booster for HDMI, and powered USB Hubs for extending. 

 

Additionally you can also get ethernet extenders like HDMI over Ethernet, and USB over Ethernet. 

Ethernet can run hundreds of meters long, so the extenders convert the signal on each end for IP transmission.

Thanks for the advice, do you have any suggestions for cables or hdmi/usb over ethernet adapters?

Not personally as I haven't used them, my longest runs through walls in my home for HDMI are ~10m. 

Just keep in mind these solutions are passive, so don't expect the sort of bandwidth you could get from Thunderbolt.

Thanks, do you know anything about what the delay would be?

Are you actually planning on using this server as your main machine?  If my servers need maintenance on the "bare metal" (ie I can't remote into them), I bring a small monitor and keyboard into the room with them.

No idea, ive only done HDMI over Ethernet with some wall plates a short distance which was for a Media Center to a TV, that was yearsssss ago.
