GTX 1070 SLI PSU Requirement (+SLI Questions)

sirbonneville

Hi all, I have just learned that two GTX 1070's can match a RTX 2080 Ti... For a LOT cheaper if you get them refurbished or used. They're going for like $230 on Ebay and even $260 for Founders Cards. I recently recieved a DOA Rx 5700XT and thought I'd get an nVidia card after only running AMD and then I made this discovery.

My question: Is a 750 W Silverstone 80+ Gold enough power for non-OC'd Gtx 1070 SLI? Plus a Ryzen 5 3600X.

Secondary questions: Is it a good idea to do a 1070 SLI? Are there games that can't use both GPUS? If so will it revert to using the top card?

in the absolute best case scenario, which is extremely rare.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Even still, an RTX 2080 TI is over $1100. Even if this is 5% slower in some games, or 10% or even matches/exceeds in some games which I have seen, isn't that value absolutely insane?

1) A good 750W PSU would be more than enough for dual 1070s.

2) No, it's not unfortunately. SLI is and has been pretty much dead for quite a while now. You'll notice neutral or even negative scaling more often than not in most modern titles.

In games ABSOLUTELY NOT

In workloads like folding very very VERY rarely

Also it bring scalability issues and it is just not worth it

SLI compatibility is hit and miss with the latest titles, some titles will only work with 1, some will crash and some will work, mainly because SLI and Crossfire setups aren't exactly as popular as they used to be, so games don't exactly support the technology that well. There is a list with games on nvidia's website that show which games are supported with SLI but the list is pretty short.

And some games which are well optimized for sli will use that

Key word *some* there aren't many

Additionally, 85-90% the latest released titles don't support SLI at all, so games like Shadow of The Tomb Raider, Control, Resident Evil 3 and many others lack support for it.

I have not checked, actually, no. I mainly play BF1/5 and the Battlefronts, as well as Fortnite, the new star wars game, and some lighter titles.

Should I go for a 1080 Ti or a 2070 Super instead of a 1070 SLI do you think? @ All

A 1080ti has a larger Frame buffer and is about the same interms of performance as a 2070 super

I personally would go for the 2070 super if your just gaming

Reading this might help make the decision. A lot of the responses in this thread seem pretty clear
