Can I pair the B450 Tomahawk Max with a Ryzen 7 3700x?

Hey now, I was wondering if it is okay for me to pair my Ryzen 7 3700x with a b450 Tomahawk Max for my upcoming build. Will the mobo be beefy enough for the CPU or do I need to jump up to the x470?

In my build I have (any other thoughts are appreciated too!):

Ryzen 7 3700x

RTX 2070

32GB 3600 CL16 4*8

Stock cooler

1 TB Crucial P1 NVME SSD

2 TB Seagate Barracuda

Corsair TXM 650W Gold rated PSU

Aerocool Cylon ATX Midtower w/ 7 fans :)

Yes, all MSI B450 'Max' motherboards support 3rd gen Ryzen out of the box. That said consider X570, while AMD had announced future CPU support on B450 this will be through what is likely a beta bios and stability will vary. If you are not 100% banking on a 4th gen Ryzen CPU upgrade then do not worry about this. Otherwise I'd recommend a 2x16GB kit over 4x8GB but all other parts look good.

It will work but if you can wait a little go with b550 or I would recommend x570 instead. The only part I would change is the 2070 for 5700xt which is marginally slower but much better price/performance.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks! Unfortunately even though I know June is a big month, I need to order ASAP to have it in 2ish weeks as a gift so I can't wait. As for the GPU, you may be right but I'm a bit of an Nvidia fan hehe :) Thanks for the suggestion though!

They did not say that, they said they would support it through select beta Bios, it is up to the motherboard vendors on whether or not to support it and going through the bios update process will erase all past CPU support. So if you have any issues you can be completely SOL. If you have experience with a beta Bios you know that this can be a hit or miss, I've 'missed' on all 3 scenarios in the past. Because of this for all new builds where the user wants to upgrade to 4th gen Ryzen I will only recommend X570/B550.

This is literally the first point from the AMD press release when they went back and announced 4th gen Ryzen would be supported on B450/X470:

"We will develop and enable our motherboard partners with the code to support “Zen 3”-based processors in select beta BIOSes for AMD B450 and X470 motherboards."

We do not actually know how different the architecture change is. To early to say.

Yes it will support. My thought is on the GPU see if you can stretch up your budget slightly higher to a 2070 super.

A 5700xt would perform very similar for less.

Ray Tracing, DLSS 2.0 are also important factors but the  5700xt is a great choice too if those two features are of zero importance to OP. But his main question was of motherboard which should be fine with that CPU.

Funny you said that, I didn’t see this until now and actually just bought the Gigabyte OC 3x 2070 super for just a bit more. Thanks for the suggestion!!
