10900K + ASUS Z490 ITX + 32GB * 2 = Lots of trouble

I built my first mini-ITX machine but ran into a couple of issues. First, my parts are:

  • i9 - 10900K
  • ASUS Z490-I Z490 Mini ITX: Link
  • G.SKILL Trident Z Neo Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR4 3200: Link
  • NZXT Z63 AIO

Problem 1: Can't have two 32GB DRAMs?

  • The system becomes extremely unreliable (freezing) when I install two DRAMs. I can't even install Windows. It goes freezing and crashing. Frustrated. No overclocking. So, I tried to install only ONE DRAM. Wow, now the system works perfectly fine. Installation and all benchmarks are running just fine.
  • What would be a reason for this issue? Can't this ITX board handle two 32GB modules (the board supports up to 64GB)? BIOS issue? Motherboard defects?

Problem 2: Wireless LAN doesn't work

  • I hooked the included wireless antenna to the board. It got my SSID. But no internet. Wired internet connection just works great. But no internet connection with wireless. What am I missing?

Okay, I have another problem with Z63 AIO, but this forum isn't a right place to rant. You might see the temperature is shown in 90 CCW. Currently, NZXT CAM can't correctly orient. I found that this was a known issue. 😂

Any hint for the troubleshooting would be appreciated! Thanks!

(I ordered 16GB * 2 DRAMs to see whether this is a ram issue.)

the problem might be in your memory controller. have you tied both sticks? The motherboard is decent so i think that it is more than cabable to run your memory. It can be bad IMC.

if the new ram doesnt work RMA the motherboard

The 10900k has the best imc that you can get

I doubt it is

But it could be the bios, a bios update could fix this

Might just be an early adopter issue with Z490.

Update your BIOS (if you haven't already) and stay on the lookout for newer versions.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for it and the latest bios

I had a similar issue with my first Z490-I. Windows would not install if I had any ram in the B slot. I'm returning that one for "repair." I got a second Z490-I and the Windows install went fine, but now I get random freezes/reboot 2 to 3x a day. Hoping as others have said this is just a BIOS issue. Have you had any success?

I switched to Gigabyte board, and it WORKS GREAT. Looks like a legit issue from ASUS side. Try other mother board.

I've been having the exact same issues with the z490i by ASUS -- it seems like quite a few people have been having similar issues... I guess the only solution is to RMA the board and buy something that isn't ASUS? It's super frustrating that ASUS hasn't acknowledged this issue yet... maybe it was a bad batch, or hopefully it's something that could get fixed with a bios update. I'm getting cynical though.

this is a bios issue (using bios 607)

I dont think the board was faulty, this happened to me too im using same Z490-I gaming MB with i9-10900k cpu and geforce RTX 2080 TI), used several different types of ram some made it go into boot loop, others would crash (shut down and restart).. finally got one now with XMP off but it runs stable (Thermaltake 2x8 2666)

i still have my gskills trident 4000 mhz that cause the boot loop.. unless i installed only one in slot A

Me too! me too!

Z490-i + 10900 (not k) + 2080ti

Confined to 1 stick of 32gb ram.

Using 2 slots is crash city.

Using 32gb for now, waiting for a newer bios fix. Contacting Asus tomorrow.

Anyone else hear from them yet?

Asus was slow to respond, (actually I was referred to Tekwind, a local distributor).
They only suggested fixes that I had already tried. I initiated a return process with Amazon and ordered the exact same MB, which arrived the following day.
After setting it all up, it worked! Hooray for 64GB ram! Not sure if that proves it was a MB issue, but it sure looks that way.
