Should I upgrade or build a new computer from scratch?

I'm thinking of building a new PC once Ryzen gen 3 and Ampere comes out but my current PC is only 2 years old and has the following specs;

Ryzen 5 2600

GTX 1070

DDR4 8GB 2666MHz

1 TB HDD

Corsair Carbide 275r

MSI B350 gaming pro carbon

CM MW 600W

so should I actually build a new PC from ground up or should i just upgrade the GPU, RAM and add an ssd? I calculated how much it would cost to build a new pc or upgrade and it came out to be (rough estimation) $675 and $444 respectively (the values are the cost of the parts minus the amount I would get back from selling the components/PC). Both options yield the almost identical gaming performance but with the upgrade path I wont be able to get a new CPU and I probably don't have to anyway. But I'm not sure if my 2600 would be able to handle the RTX 3070 when that comes out so there's that. Also I have to admit that I enjoy the building/planning aspect of PC gaming more than actually gaming on one so I might be biased when it comes to choosing between the 2 options. But at the end I feel like it might be a waste of money to build a new PC in 2 years. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Why do you want to upgrade or get a new machine?  What's wrong with this one?  I'd get more RAM and some SSD's, done.

B350 motherboards are not going to be compatible with Zen 3 4th gen parts. Zen 2 is a decent upgrade still, with some great improvements for a gamer seeking high refresh rates.

I think you should upgrade the GPU first and then see if your CPU needs an improvement as well

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

oh yea mb i meant to say zen 3 fourth gen. But I don't really want to upgrade to Ryzen 3000 because to me thats just a sidegrade. If I were to upgrade my CPU it has to be ryzen 4000 but at that point i'd have to buy a new mobo and all that and i might as well build a new PC which is why im considering it in the first place.

If third gen ryzen isn't an upgrade, fourth gen probably won't be much either. The difference between the 2600 and 3600 is pretty notable in quite a few games, and if you're targeting high frames per second, it's hardly a bad choice.

There is also the rumored "3600 XT" with really high clocks, but I have my doubts about its existence (we'll see)

For the moment I would get 16gb of faster ram and an ssd. Personally I plan to get a 2000 series card when ampere comes out because those cards seem too powerful. If this cpu doesn’t satisfy you get something like a 3700 or 3800 second hand when prices drop. When the prices really start dropping for intel 9th gen I am going to buy a used 9700k

Well if that's what you want, then buy the latest when it comes out.  For performance, I'd do as I suggested and you'd have a nicely balanced rig.

To be honest, it's lacking a good bit if you're into the latest hardware.  Not real sure what you meant by that.

No I mean 2 years is considered relatively new but I like to change PCs often. This was my first PC and it was kind of a budget build so yeah.

But is 2666MHz good enough for ryzen? I was thinking of just selling what I have right now to get a 3200MHz kit

2666 is plenty for Ryzen 2600.  The 3xxx chips like 3600MHz.

3200 is the sweet spot.  2666 is fine  and can be tweaked to get there.

You already have 2666 so you didn't give care about what Ryzen 2600 needed back then, why now?   Plus, you've been in single channel mode, so going dual channel will be a big lift regardless.

Are you seriously running without an SSD or did you just forget to list it?

3000-3200mhz is the sweet spot for Zen+, but the performance gains in moving from 2666 to 3200 aren't going to be massive. Try overclocking what you've got, you can probably get it in the 2933 range, which is pretty much there.

I do recommend getting a second stick for dual channel, since that absolutely will mean gains. Likely a 10% improvement or more.

In terms of bang for your buck, that's the way to go since again you're probably looking at $20-25 total.

back in 2018 ram prices were insane and I had to build my PC with a tight budget because i was 15 so thats why i got 2666mhz.

And yes, I honestly don't get the big deal about SSDs I'm fine with hdd booting speeds but I'm considering an upgrade soon.

If you're considering buying all new RAM ($60-70) for small gains, a $20 SSD boot drive will give notably smoother experience for your money...

I would be amazed if you were unhappy with that money spent.

This one is budget friendly and has a DRAM cache, so it's the one I'd go with. I've got a few and I'm happy with them for the price.

I'll probably just go with an NVMe drive though. Always wanted one but couldn't really afford it until now.

They are good! Really unless you're a content creator the difference wont be noticeable between a SATA SSD and an NVMe, but the price difference isnt huge, so it's not like it's a poor investment either way.
