PS5 super fast SSD vs PC with more ram!

Hi guys, do you think that a pc with much more RAM can outperform PS5 in loading data for game level since the PC can catch the required data in its extra RAM.

now an average PC will have 16 to 32 GB ram plus the ram available on a GPU card. I think that is a lot more than what a PS5 can afford and that is why they come up with super fast SSD because they do not want add more ram then the PS5 system will have to constantly read data from the SSD.

It will depend on how the game developer ports the game.

 

Like I said in another thread, a game developer could check how much ram is available when game starts and then silently start to convert all the assets (textures/resources/sounds etc) and use 1-2 cores (or more if you have lots of cores) to uncompress and prepare everything and keep uncompressed in ram.

Game would load the standard speed right at the beginning when nothing is already prepared, but as you play levels the game can prepare stuff in background for faster loading when needed.

On consoles, game developers have to concern themselves with the memory budget ... they have 16 gb but let's say 1 gb is reserved, so out of 15 gb 5-8 GB may be needed for the active scene / level, so they may have only a few GB free for caching stuff and because of this, it may make sense to use hardware decompressors and stuff to speed up loading from disk.

Technically, not unless the rest of the specs are better. So if the PS5 is 8 cores, you need an 8 core CPU that is faster than it. Likewise you need more RAM, and a SSD that has a spec rating equal or greater. So for a PC that means a Ryzen 7 3700X or better. >16GB memory and a SSD with a 1TB NVMe PCIe4 SSD.

 

The SSD cost will probably make the PS5 look affordable, since the SSD can run between $300 and $700. Where as 32GB of ram can run from $115 to $950, 64GB can run from $220 to $2000 and 128GB can run $460 to $1400.

 

So assuming you could get the 3 components necessary, Ryzen 7 3700X, 1TB NVMe PCIe4, 32GB RAM and an appropriate motherboard, you've already spent $300 for the CPU, $300 for the SSD, $115 for the RAM and $200 for the MB. So you're already at $915 before you add a chassis, or power supply.

 

Depending how a game has been ported however, at best, turning the page file off, may force the game to remain resident in memory for it's entire operation. Consoles don't usually invoke page swapping where as PC's do unless turned off.
