buying a cpu off of ebay

Who on earth would pay real money for the 7980XE?? It's insanely hot, power hungry, has tons of security issues and performance is less than equivalent AMD options. It's a dead end

Hello, this i9 7980xe is said to be new but open box, what do you guys think that means and would you buy it? i already have an x299 board

Just sell your X299 board and get a 3950X or something, or Threadripper 3000 even

or buy my 1950X system on the relative cheap, has an X399M and 32Gbs of RAM.

Seems fine. I mean it's a company ebay user. However for that price is pretty high. If money is no issue then by all means.

I buy GPUs and certain other PC things from ebay "stores" like that.

That's too expensive. You could get an AMD Ryzen 9 3950x AND a motherboard for less than that processir.

Nothing, it's dead, let it die lol. let someone else deal with the X299 board, should make your life easier with Ryzen, not to mention it's easier to keep cool

I don't think it would be an issue to purchase it from that seller, seller is reputable and has very good reviews, however as @5x5 it's way overpriced, $1000 for a 7980XE is insanity. Cut your loses, sell your X299 board and get a Ryzen 3000 CPU and Mobo. The 3950x and a decent X570 board will be a much better purchase and much less of a hassle. Hell even for less than that I don't know if I would do it. Ryzen 3000 is where it's at for workstation processors right now, Intel is just overpriced as hell even for their new processors, it would be stupid to not go Ryzen.

But Intel chips are traditionally better with overclocking then ryzen because they have more headroom

Not really how it works at all, what do you need the PC for?

also good luck overclocking the 18 core CPU with a 500W power draw...

for real though just buy my 1950X lol

If you're looking for a higher all-core overclock then you're right.  But I don't think people get 7980xe CPUs to anything like what they can a 9900K so it wouldn't be as entertaining as you hope it would be.

Not really. A 3950X on an X570 board will be cheaper and MUCH faster than the 7980/9980/10980 intel CPUs. X299 has been dead since launch as for the same CPU price you get a 24 core Threadripper that brutally murders this CPU

A 7980xe at 4.5ghz can out perform a 3950x on cinebench r20. What threadripper is only $1,000?

Here’s the real limits on a 7980XE, imo:

R9 3950X - $720

X570 motherboard - $250 (can spend less or more depending on desired features)

So for a used 7980XE, I’d be expecting a substantial price cut below what a brand new 3950X and motherboard would cost me.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT | ASUS ROG Strix X470-F | 16GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB @3400MHz | EVGA RTX 2080S XC Ultra | EVGA GQ 650 | HP EX920 1TB / Crucial MX500 500GB / Samsung Spinpoint 1TB | Cooler Master H500M

A 7980XE at 4.5 uses more power than two 3950Xs and still can't really outperform the Ryzen 9 as Zen2 has a good 15% higher IPC than the i9

Even like a 3700X or 3900X at most would be fine for all of that unless you are specifically seeking world records with LN2

should still really just buy my 1950X system though

Even at 4.6, the 7980 can't beat a 3950x while also outputting more heat than a fire

Not really - the 3950X will deliver better results as it's a single NUMA node.

Only if you need 24 cores for something, the 3950X is way easier to use as a platform.

but it's still really unnecessary for your use case lol.

If anything focus on memory overclocking with Ryzen, that's where you get the most performance out of it.
