So you want a combo nas and desktop?

- NAS would be seperate from the actual desktop, if I understand the build process of a NAS correctly

How much storage do you want?

Wht network speeds does the nas need?

What form factor?

Do you need to do anything other than a nas on there? A basic nas can run on pretty low end hardware.

how fast do you want to move files to the nas? Most home networks are gigiabit, so you limited to about 120mB/s unless you upgrade your home network.

Do you want a tower or rack? How big cna the nas be?

I was looking at the size of the 6 or 8 tray synology as basis for form and size

There are some cases that are simmilar to the synology, like the cs381.

Id almost just get a synology for a basic nas, super simple to user, nice formfactor, and low power.
