Looking to buy/build power efficient server

Hey guys,

as the title says, I am looking for a power efficient server. I am in Germany and the electricity cost is rather high.

Now what would I use the server for: Mainly backing up data and plex.

Data wise: a lot of pictures and well, backups.

As for plex: Probably about 3 clients and 1080p, so no transcoding is required. I would guess by running it 24/7 and as a plex server, it would we wise to have ecc memory? Budget wise I would rather not pay more than 300-500€ (without the storage).

Would it be a good idea to grab something like an old server from dell? Or maybe build something off of Ryzen?

How much storage do you want?

ECC is always nice to have, but for newer hardware, it might not be cheap.

Your best bet is something like a used xeon e3(probably can get them cheap), or pentium/i3, or ryzen chip for lower power. All of those will idle under 50w.

If you're not doing any heavy transcoding check out the WD My Cloud Pro, my brother has one set up as a Plex server and it only draws around 20 watts under load.

You could run 4x 4TB drives in RAID 5 for 12TB of usable space and the ability to replace a single drive without loosing any data.

Id personlly go synology or qnap for the better softwarae.

For 10tb, Id get a2x10tb drives, and run a raid 1, then add more later, lower power, easier to upgrade aswell.
