Power Surges gone bad - help me troubleshoot

 Share

Hi everyone

For the last few months, my pc had a lot of troubles with power surges, activating the motherboard's Power Surge Protection (ASUS) which usually triggered while playing games, but sometimes (rare) at random desktop moments

As I thought these were linked to the PSU, i decided to buy a new PSU : Corsair RM750x 80PLUS Gold

Once I installed it everything looked to work fine for a month, until it came back

I think the probability for being once again a PSU failure is pretty low, so it must be something else

I ran OCCT tests in order to know what is going on

30 minutes of intensive load for both CPU and GPU ( I tested GPU ONLY, then CPU ONLY, then BOTH ) and none of these tests were able to replicate the power surge happening while gaming.

Yesterday, I tried to play some Game ( not that intensive : Black Ops from 2010 ) and once i get to the menu ( 3D rendered ) my screen shut off... so I rebooted the system, and this happened everysingle time i finally loaded into a game ( so when 3d rendering kicks in )

The GTX970 was still being detected in device manager though...

I deduced that my GPU was dead :/

Did my old/new power supply damaged my gpu ?

was the gpu the reason why I had power surges ?

Or was it the motherboard ?

How can I find out ?!

thanks :)

When I get power surge issues in my area I first suspect the power company

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

What was your previous PSU ? Swap this GPU with another one, i.e test different mid\high-end GPU in your PC and test your GPU in other PC.

Tag or quote me so i see your reply

I chose it 5 years ago, so I don't know what it is :/ ( I got rid of it )

I don't have any GPU available at the moment to test...
don't even have another pc to plug my 970 onto.

There's a lockdown in France, so can't give it to a friend to test it

but will do it once the lockdown is over :)
