5700xt and 1,000 dollars

Budget (including currency): 1,000 dollars

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, 4k, 1440 144hz. SPSS and Stata, however those programs are not strenuous.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I'm long overdue for an upgrade. I'll be keeping my 5700xt (PC Red Dragon), SSD, HDD and 3 140mm noctua fans. This leaves me with a 1,000 for upgrades. I've been thinking about waiting for Zen 3 because I don't need to upgrade, I want too; however, I don't have the patience and Zen 2 is sufficient. Here are my preliminary thoughts. I would like to keep in it the 800-900 range after taxes, however, I likely won't. How would ya'll spend 1000.

CPU: 3900x (400-450)

Mobo: X570 (200-250)

CPU cooler:?

PSU: They are all sold out. At least 750 watts and fully modular

Case: h510 or h510I

Ram: DDR4 3600 (80-120)

What's your current CPU?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

If you want to game at 4k or 1440p 144hz, you should really consider selling your 5700 XT and buying something more powerful, maybe an RTX 2070 Super or 2080 if possible. Instead of the 3900x maybe just a 3700x instead. I don't think the 3900x is worth the extra ~$125 unless you're really going to take advantage of the extra 4 cores.

If you want to stick with the 5700XT:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($294.14 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X63 98.17 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($149.99 @ Best Buy)
Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($189.99 @ Best Buy)
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($69.99 @ Best Buy)
Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 PE 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $924.09
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This build has some focus on aesthetics/RGB, if you don't care about that go for non-RGB RAM, an ASUS Prime X570 mobo (no wifi) and a NH-D15 and you can squeeze a 3900x in there.

I5 4460 3.2 GHz. It's surprisingly still sufficient for 1080p gaming.

Then ya, Ryzen 3000 is a good upgrade

but do you need the 12 core? the R5 3600 is plenty if you aren't streaming or doing other stuff.

Interesting, I'm not likely to take advantage of the extra cores now; however, I like to build and then ignore, so i thought the extra cores would be useful a couple years down the road. I guess, if it gives me more money to spend on other parts, sticking to the 3700x would be smarter. Do you think the upgrade to a 2070 super is necessary? The only thing that has bothered me with the 5700xt is the drivers.

I don't necessarily need the 12 cores now. I might in the future, but the consensus seems to be save money on the CPU now, so I can afford better parts around it, and upgrade in the future if it is needed.

Actually, looking a little more at benchmarks, it seems there isn't a huge difference from the 5700xt to the 2070 S. Like <5fps on most games. Assuming driver stability (which should hopefully only get better, pls fix AMD) I think the 5700 should be fine for a while. I'd stick with the 3700x, keep the extra $125 for maybe another big SSD for games, or just pocket it for a future GPU upgrade a year or two down the line. Or maybe a nice keyboard/mouse or something if you don't already have one : )

If that's the case by the time you actually use the extra cores Ryzen 5000 will be out on a new socket lol

just get the 8 core if anything.

I would get a case that actually has airflow though, like a coolermaster H500 or NR 400/600

That was one of my biggest concerns with the H510, especially if I go with an air cooler. None of the major reviewers seemed to mention it, which surprised me. I still use my phantom 530 because it has great airflow lol.  Thank you, I'll check those out.

Likely another monitor, although, I probably should save it for a new GPU or SSD :(

There's also the 011 dynamic if you want to get into watercooling, gamers nexus covers all things cases

I miss the old Phantom line : (

If you want something modern but with good airflow I like the Phanteks P300A or P400A (I think the P500A is out this year as well if you want more space/potential watercooling)

Yea, I thought the p500a was supposed  to be out by now, apparently not. The p400a looks solid. I've been considering the Lian Li PC 0-11 dynamic  but it is just a little too expensive.
