Not sure what I'm looking at. Is it because they are advertising it as if it was a gaming laptop instead of whatever it is supposed to be?

Apple recently refreshed their 13 inch macbook pro after the macbook air, now with more USB ports and a odd use case photo

The new MacBook Pro is here, but it may not quite be what you had expected. Primed with Apple's Magic Keyboard, the MacBook Pro is the last of the company's laptops to move away from its controversial Butterfly switches. Reflecting 3DMark, you can now equip the baby MacBook Pro with up to 32 GB of RAM and 4 TB of SSD storage. Both are soldered to the Pro's Logic Board, though. Likewise, the new MacBook Pro can be configured with a Ice Lake-U series processors, which Apple claims will deliver up to 80% faster graphics performance than the last MacBook Pro, and 2.8x faster performance than the most-recent dual-core MacBook Pro.

So, Jon Prosser is two for two, first with the release of the iPhone SE and now the refresh of the MacBook Pro. However, Apple has not upgraded the small MacBook Pro to a 14.1-inch display as people, including Prosser, claimed was likely to be the case. So, while the MacBook Pro remains a 13-inch machine, it has received several upgrades. Apple continues to offer the MacBook Pro 13 in two tiers, which it distinguishes with two or four Thunderbolt 3 ports. It is worth keeping in mind that the two Thunderbolt 3 port models are stuck with a choice between last-generation processors. Specifically, these can be configured with either a Core i5-8257U or Core i7-8557U, the same 8th generation chips that the company included with the last two Thunderbolt 3 port MacBook Pro 13.

If you want an Ice Lake-U MacBook Pro 13, then these start at US$1,799 with a Core i5, 16 GB of LPDDR4X-3733 RAM and 512 GB of storage. We can confirm that the entry-level Ice Lake-U series processor is the Core i5-1038NG7, a reference to which we saw courtesy of @TUM_APISAK in February. A 28 W part, the Core i5-1038NG7 can clock up to 3.8 GHz. The Core i5-1038NG7 is joined by the Core i7-1068NG7 as 3DMark recently confirmed also. Another 28 W chip too, the Core i7-1068NG7 can reach up to 4.1 GHz. Both CPUs integrate an Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 GPU. All SKUs are available to order now on Apple.com. Apple will begin shipping orders in 3-5 working days.

Thoughts: Look at the first picture, do you see anything out of the ordinary? Nevertheless this still looks expensive, I could really use a new mac mini instead. Also going to be interesting to see the benchmarks against a Windows laptop with Ryzen installed.

Potentially puncturing the battery, starting a fire, and burning your house down is part of the fun, tf you mean? I'd take glued in any day over boring old screws.

If it weren't that my laptop mostly serves as a backup system in case my desktop fails (I kinda need to be online ASAP), I'd have the new 13-inch MBP on order.  The base system based on the newer chip (2GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) easily covers all I'd ask of it.

One of the consideration here is the extra internal space that would be required to support the 4 TB3 ports chipsets, i believe the 10th gen intel includes some of this on the package.

Interestingly for apple it seems the high end specs on this work out as quite a good deal, some of that might be that almost no-one is offing 16GB let alone 32GB laptops in a 13" form factor, and good luck finding many options that can be configured upto 4TB of nvm storage. But if you need a high memory system for on-the go work this machine might well be quite popular.

The 2 TB3 model is stupid, and has no reason to exist. Just kill it already, please.

Other than that, a great though incremental upgrade. Would have liked to see a price cut, as $1700 is a lot to swallow for a base model. 512GB of base storage and 16GB of base RAM for the 4 TB3 model is great though, and likely part of the reason.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Well it exists for this who want significantly more power than the MacBook Air. While I agree that it being on 8th Gen still makes no sense, it does have a place in the lineup.

I would not be surprised if the reason for this is intel is not able to meet the volumes that apple would need. Even Dell are still defaulting to the 8th gen chips on their XPS when you look at their website.

Id rather the 4 TB3 version have spec-down versions with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage, along with a price cut across the 13" pro lineup

Finally the 13" gets the Magic Keyboard! Also price cuts for the 2-port models! (which sadly, didn't see a spec bump) But otherwise, surprising lack of interesting changes .. MacBook Pro's usually get redesigned on a 4-year cadence, I wonder where that supposed 14" model went
