Super Mario 64 ported to PC

Super Mario 64 has been ported to PC from the N64 unofficially through the decomp code without emulation. There are a lot of misunderstanding going on with the PC port and misinformation aswell as it is not getting much attention. It was all over 4chan and was created by the same people who decompiled sm64. You can find on on their discord sever which is here but you need to provide the rom first. They also managed to get it running on the switch. Of course I am not going to post the file due to copyright. It currently supports windows and linux right now. It can run on directx or opengl at the moment. 

 

So why is this useful?

Having the source code and being able to compile it with multiple windowing platforms like sdl and glx with graphics apis such as opengl and directx, you could easily run sm64 on many new platforms and hardware without the need of emulation. There is also a speed advantage since you are not emulating a console but playing it on your pc itself.

Another thing is having a port to pc is just cool how they did it. With having the display lists rendered through a graphics api you could mess around with the shaders or how the game is rendered itself as shown as in a image I attached. This has also enabled sm64 to be played inside of the webbrowser with webgl and emscripten.

 

If your wondering about if this is considered piracy it is not because you have to supply a base rom to first decompile before you can get the executable to run the port

 

EDIT: They disabled invites due to the mass amount of people coming just for this

 

Quick Update as of may 7th

Nintendo has been taking down videos showcasing it and direct links to the compile executable.

Under emulation, this isn't emulated. But also emulators run it just fine, so this was basically just a "see if we could" thing. There's no practical reason to do it as far as I can tell, other than maybe making ports to other platforms easier.

Oh, I see. What are the advantages of this? I can't think of many, wouldn't a normal emulator be better since you can have multiple games all in one program and whatnot?

I mean you no longer have to worry about the performance of actually emulating a console but instead play it and it makes it easier to port to other consoles without the need of emulation like they did with the switch. Also since it runs the display lists through a graphics api you might be able to add more stuff to the game itself. Either way it is just cool how they made it work on PC

Performance is likely to be much better. Most modern PCs are able to emulate it fine of course but hypothetically you could run this on an intel compute stick or some other low power device.

I ran a n64 emu back in the day with a 3dfx voodoo 3 and Piii CPU. why the need for a port?

You dont need DX12 for raytracing you could do it in other graphics apis through stuff like compute shaders. And it runs on both DX12 and OpenGL. You might be able to add raytracing though

umm, How is there a speed boost from not emulating the N64 if Pentium 3 system can emulate just about any if not all n64 games at 60FPS. A modern system would be 1000FPS+  The rest of what you stated can be done in a emu. The only real benefit here is adding stuff to the game or modding it.

Dynamic Recompilation is an emulation technique used for N64/GC/Wii/PS3 emulation. It's done on-the-fly, and that's typically how emulators work for 32-bit consoles.

 

What they're talking about here, is more of a brute-forced recompilation, which is basically the same idea (recompilation) except instead of trying to simulate the hardware, it's using the native OS API's (eg OpenGL) instead of the N64's libraries. It basically removes the part that needs to be emulated.

 

Of course there are two big catches:

1) This is about as illegal as it comes (as it's literately decompilation of the existing game, not a clean-room re-implementation)

2) Nintendo of course holds the trademarks on various Mario-game IP. So even calling it "Mairo 64" in any context is going to get you curb stomped by the Nintendo's lawyers.

you can run it on FAR lower end systems, like say a raspberry pi 0.

this is on an overclocked pi0, but it still drops frames in an n64 emulator. this is where you would notice a benefit from running the game natively.

Let's just say that I've hypothetically been playing this for the past hour.  It would hypothetically be awesome.  I just (hypothetically) wish that it wasn't necessary to manually cap the framerate to 30, and that the draw distance was improved.  SM64 has always had ridiculous pop-in.

 

Edit: To the people who keep asking what the advantage is, besides the fact that it doesn't need an emulator, it supports ultra widescreen and high resolutions.  You don't have to do crazy patches for that like on an emulator.
