I'm about to update from an old mobo+cpu to a new one, anything i should do beforehand?

Go to solution Solved by -rascal-,

The ASUS B450 should support Ryzen 2000-series right out of the box.

That said, the BIOS firmware on the motherboard might be a few patches out of date.

The Ryzen 2600 should be recognized by the motherboard; download and update the motherboard BIOS from here:

https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/PRIME-B450-PLUS/HelpDesk_Download/

As for preparing for the changeover...back up all the data that you want to keep from the C Drive (e.g. where Windows 10 is installed).

Is Windows 10 tied to your Microsoft account?

It is recommended to reinstall Windows when you do a major platform swap.

Once Windows is reinstalled, download + install the latest drivers.

You can find the latest motherboard drivers on ASUS' website:

https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/PRIME-B450-PLUS/HelpDesk_Download/

Grab the latest graphics card drivers from AMD's website:

https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-500-series/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-560

And...you should be good to go mostly.

Heyo, first post (and first build) here so be gentle.

I've being using a converted dell inspiron 560 computer for the past few months, with a new case, gpu, cpu, psu, and storage. Its a windows 10 machine with a DDR3 inspiron 560 motherboard with an intel Q9400 CPU at current.

My question is, if I'm upgrading from that to a Ryzen 2600 inside a Asus b450 prime plus motherboard, do I need to install any drivers or BIOS updates, or just basically do anything before I change over?(i.e, whilst the old mobo and cpu is in use) Sorry if its a bit of a newbie question, else any tips would be appreciated!

I would recommend updating the BIOS using your old processor before switching to the new CPU to avoid potential compatibility/stability/performance problems later. You won't need to modify your system drivers before switching over to a new processor, you can do that after switching the processors.

Definitely make sure to write down your windows 10 key that you can find under  system properties. New hardware often deactivates windows. Also, you will probably need a new case as most dell chassis are completely incomparable with standard motherboards of any and all sizes or makes.

When doing a platform upgrade from an intel chipset to AMD the best option is to do a fresh install of Windows as a lot of the times platform upgrades without doing a fresh install can result in corrupted drivers/software, bluescreens, crashes etc. It will also not have your Windows product key so you may want to write it down so you can reactivate it after the upgrade. Also make sure that your case for your prebuilt dell allows for standard motherboards as most have proprietary mounting and your new motherboard may not fit in it.

I see, but how do I update the bios for the new motherboard (since it wont take the old intel cpu) whilst using my old cpu? Am I able to basically download it onto the drive and then select it using the new board?

Also to the questions about case, I have got a new case already which has ATX and MATX mountings, thanks ♡.

The procedure for updating the BIOS of the motherboard depends on the specific model of motherboard that you are working with, what motherboard are you using?

Dell seem to make it as hard as possible to find out what the actual motherboard is, this is the page for the original computer https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukbsdt1/product-support/servicetag/0-bW9Kbm5JZzhueXl4TmltOGFiQktuQT090/overview#

Edit: Old one https://microdream.co.uk/dell-inspiron-560-mt-socket-lga775-intel-g43t-dm1-v-a00-pc-motherboard-k83v0.html
I'm still looking to try to work the exact model of motherboard but I can't say I'll be able to..

What was the motherboard you upgraded to, if I may ask? Sounds promising though.

Sorry, I thought you were keeping the motherboard consistent and wanted to upgrade the CPU to a newer one running off the same socket. I checked for potential compatibility issues with the ASUS Prime B450+ motherboard and the Ryzen 5 2600, and you should be fine without needing any BIOS updates (when you change the motherboard, you get a new and different BIOS and all of old BIOS settings will not be existent on the new configuration).

I don't get it...the old pc is intel why is people suggesting to update bios...

And b450 works with 2600 out of the box why are people discussing about updating the bios? You can update it with the 2600 if you want...

Basically just buy the b450 motherboard,2600 cpu and ddr4 rams...install windows and drivers...then do any overclock you want...
