Which CPU should I get? i5 9400f or R5 2600

Hi, so I'm planning to build a PC for $1300 NZD, which is about $780 USD.

The main specs:

GTX 1650 SUPER

2 x 8GB 3200MHz

550W Cooler Master MWE (BRONZE)

So, basically I'm just wondering if I should get the 9400f or 2600. They are the same price in NZ ($240 NZD which is $144 USD). I'm obviously going to be gaming. But, I'm going to be working on Virtual Machines, media browsing and other stuff (stuff being very normal and not super extensive work). Thanks in advance :)

Yes as the 3600 beats the 9400 in gaming and annihilated it in everything else. Really, the i5 has been dead for years at this point

Also look at the 5500 XT or RX 580/590. They usually perform better than the 1650 and cost about the same

The 9400F is slightly faster for most games.

You can do better for that budget. This is a bit over but it has a much better PSU and GPU. That SSD is just okay but at that price it's an absolute steal. $16 USD for a 240gb ssd is insane. Even a 120GB SSD for that price would be a good deal.

Afaik that motherboard will work with Coffee Lake out of the box, doesn't need a BIOS update.

I'm getting a 1650 Super. It's a little worse (depending on the games) but the 5500XT is around $50 NZD more. Also the 580 and 590 aren't in stock at my local retailers :/

The 1650 reviewed pretty badly.  Consider checking the used market for your GPU.  It will help you stretch your budget and maybe get a higher tier card (ie. 1660,ti,super, GTX 1070).

Do consider a 1060 or 1660. Used is also fine. The 1650's 128-bit interface is a massive bottleneck in modern games.

I made a change to the ram as the mobo you have gone for only supports up to 2666mhz, you need a Z390 board to use the xmp to get the ram to run at 3200mhz. I also changed the GPU to a 2060 which will save you $50 for similar performance and you get ray tracing too :)

Actually @sahil! @Rancidpunk I'm gonna recommend the Ryzen 2600. With the faster memory it should actually beat the i5 9400F or at least shorten the lead. If you use Adobe Suite and care about Ray Tracing, sure, get an RTX 2060. If you can find a Ryzen 1600 'AF' in New Zealand, get it. 12nm 6 core with hyperthreading. Same performance as a 2600, just cheaper.

That's why I smiled, I bought a 1660 ti just before the 2000 series came out and don't regret it although the £100 trade-in I got from Asus for my old card was the deciding factor!

It has proved pretty much perfect paired with a 9400f on a Z390 that I ended up with after my own personal Ryzen 3600 nightmare.
