BOINC Pentathlon 2020

I'm not home right now to check on if the 5960X rig survived the night but thanks to the VPS I was able to SSH in. If htop is anything to go off of I'd say she's still going fine. CPU is sitting at 65°C. I hope it stays that way until the event is over:

Would be very nice :) But you could also abuse it and just have 20 spare computers laying arround waiting for a WU shortage

Gonna need you to spell this one out for me. I'm not understanding how this would work to someone's advantage.

This last hour 1,280,025 --> 1,306,400 == 26,375 this hour

EDIT:

If my messy numbers are right I believe that leaves us about 50K short?

I have no bunkers left.

If we're only 50,000 off I can live with that.

It's the best out of 3 throws and we want this throw and the last (we're skipping Throw4) to all be around the 1.5 million we got on Throw2

2-2M

3-3M

4-4M

5-5M

Our total would be computed as 1M+2M+3M?

The important part is to be consistent across our top 3 throws. Our first throw was only ~1.2M so in 3 of the next 4 throws we are aiming to meet or slightly exceed our 2nd throw of ~1.5M so our final score will be ~1.5M.

The strategy here is that the last throw (Throw5) will now likely be on the 17th-18th or 18th-19th (ideal) so we skip the next Throw (Throw4) and I can spend all that time before the start bunkering and hopefully have enough bunkered to cover most of the final throw so other team members can concentrate their resources on other projects.

The ideal case is Throw 5 is on the last day of the competition (18th-19th) so I would have 3 days to bunker so i'd have 660,000 in bunkers and another 220,000 to contribute over the course of the day meaning we would only need the rest of the team to contribute 620,000.

Worst Case the 5th throw is the second last day so in this case the rest of the team would need to contribute 840,000

Our score has been bouncing between 20,000 and 40,000 on alternate hours likely because some of peoples systems aren't reporting that often. So with an average of 30,000/hr over the next 5 hours we should be able to hit 1.5M but like I've said 1.45M is still better than the 1.2M from Throw1!

@Gorgon Fantastic explanation. Once today finishes (I think that's 8PM CT, someone could check my math on that), I'll go back to Rosetta + Amicable (GPU). I have my Laptop bunkering Ibercivis, it won't be that much, but every bit helps. I'll keep an eye out for if you need help with the last throw. When will they announce what day the last throw will take place?

The events are announced 3 days in advance for Javelin:

Quote

Each day of Javelin Throw is announced three days in advance. While all disciplines start and end at 00.00 UTC, the projects may be announced at different times (00.00 UTC, 06.00 UTC, 12.00 UTC, 18.00 UTC) to avoid that some teams are always surprised in their sleep.

But are announced at different times during the day so the definition of "three days in advance" is rather vague so it could be announced at 18:00UTC two days and 6 hours before the start at the latest.

So it would appear the last throw is the 18th-19th as if it were on the 17th-18th it would have had to have been announced at 18:00UTC or 14:00EST today which it was not.

I've noticed some anomalous behavior that can be taken advantage of.

If you load up Rosetta or NumberFields in Boinc Manager with 3 days worth of work and then set the project preferences to "Not Allow New Tasks" it then appears to submit completed tasks immediately rather than once every couple of hours.

The down-side is you have to remember to go back and Allow New Tasks at a later point to fill the system up with tasks again.

It does not count as a Folding Event so no. And, there are no BOINC event badges just BOINC Badges for total points. See:

The down-side is you have to remember to go back and Allow New Tasks at a later point to fill the system up with tasks again.

With GNU/Linux at least this could be automated relatively easily with a script that you have set to run every hour or 30 mins.

May be achievable on Windows using batch files or PowerShell scripts but I wouldn't know where to start.

we could even slightly outperform the 2nd throw if the hourly gain stays like that.

We don't benefit from doing that so best is to switch to bunkering NumberFields right away or switch to Amicable, based on how hard it was for us to get to 1.5 this time I'd say bunker numbers.

You can force submit the task by updating the project. I am pretty sure you can use the boinc client api to do it:

project_op(PROJECT&, char* op)
Perform a control operation on the given project (only the master_url field needs to be set). op is one of "suspend", "resume", "reset", "detach", "update", "allowmorework", "nomorework". Since 5.10.14: "detach_when_done", "dont_detach_when_done".

Disclaimer, too lazy to do it, so I keep my 12 boinc manager windows open and regularly go manually update the project that need it 🤫
